Stars had a gala time Thursday night
when the new officers were in
stalled, an enjoyable literary program

The Union Sunday school children
are drilling for the Christmas can

Mrs. Wm. Allen has been visiting
a few days with her sister and other
friends in Wallowa.
Mr. and Mrs. Kiddle entertained a
few of their friends at progressive
whist Saturday evening.
Mrs. E. Pos's child, who had been
111 of pneumonia, died Monday
night. Funeral Wednesday from the
home.
. Richard VanFelt is going soon to
Ashland to vi3lt his Bisters.
Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Poley, en route
to Portland for the holldaya, visited
between trains with Mrs. Poley'a.
father.
Mrs. Martin Larsan will entertain
at Christmas time their daughter,
Mrs. Ed Huffman, of Elgin, also Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Mace of the same
place.

There is a remarkable record In
tax paying In Wallowa county this
hard times" year. Of the total tax
of $95,538.14, over 93 per cent has
been collected and turned over I'd

delinquent amounts to but $4608.96,

As it seems impossible to get housa
hold help here, neighbors have will
ingly assisted, as lay in their power.
J. A. Denny is putting the finish
ing touches of paint, etc., to a good
substantial, ronmy dwelling house,
built by himself of the best part of
his old houss and store combined.
When finished and with the addition
of a few extras in the way of furni
ture, Mr. and Mrs. Danny will have
probably as roomy and comfoortable
a home as any on the river.
Born, to the wife of Roy Simmons,
a daughter.
After a .very pleasant trip and
visit of threa months with relatives
and friends in Indiana, Iowa, Wash
ington and also In Union. Elgin, Wal
lowa and Enterprise, and a stop al
her homestead, Mrs. Alice M. Bell
will remain with friends on the river
for a time,- whi'e the blizzards raga
"on top." On the day after Thanks
giving Mrs. Bell received word of thj
death in Oskaloosa, Iowa, of her
niece, Mrs. Laura Falrall, nee Walk
er. Mrs. FalraTs last visit to her
father's home In River Junction, la.,
was made when early In October she
came to meat her aunt, Mrs. Bell.
She was brought to River Junction
and buried near hsr father's home
In the Walker cemetery, one wee'.;
before Thanksgiving.'
Jack Johnson is having quite a
large addition bui:t to his house, or
so it looks from the road. Imnaha
and neighborhood is coming to tho
front since the advent of the rail
road to Enterprise.
Mr. and Mrs. L. Lloyd visited the
town of Joseph, Friday, returning
Sunday, They a3 others, report It
quite stormy oatlde compared with
Imnaha.
J. A. Denny and wife have just re
ceived a fine lot of dolls and toys
for Christinas.
Imnaha has a Sunday school
which seems to be progressing nice
ly with Roy EdRmand (who Is teach
ing here) as supe:Intendent. Am not
sure of the other officers, but bo

A basket social was held at the
school house here Friday night last.
It wa3 fairly well attended. Bask
ets sold from $1 to $3.75. All pres
ent seemed to enjoy themselves.
Of the total million dollar Increase
in the assessed valuation this year
over 1907, over one-fifth is credited
to the three towns of Enterprise,
Joseph and Wallowa
Enterprise's assessed valuation for
1908, is $588,195 or almost $600 for
every man, woman and child in the
city. The gain over a year ago Is
$114,133, an astonishingly rapid
growth in wealth. And It Is no sud
den spurt either, for the gain in
1907 over 1906 was $78,062.
Joseph and Wallowa are making;
steady gains, the former's total be
ing increased $40,6,90 ' this year, and
Wallowa's $51,480.
Lostlne's assessment this year Is
$110,080, or pj-act cally the same as
last year.

Dowd shipped threa more cars of
cattle from Enterprise, Friday, to the
Wallace market. Day and DIshman
will ship three cars of hogs from
Enterprise, Saturday, and nine of
cattle and hogs from Lostine and
Wallowa. Mr. Hotchkls3 shipped
two cars of hogs from Joseph, Mon
day, and one of hogs and cattle
from Enterprise.
