Why Build Snake
River Railroad
IMPORTANCE OF HUNTINGTON
LEWISTON LINE TOLD IN OF
FICIAL PUBLICATION.
In an official publication by the
Union Pacific relative to the plans of
-he company dealing with new lines,
lays the Lewlston Tribune, conslder
ible attention is devoted to the Hunt-ington-Iewiston
line now under con
struction and Its objects. From this
publication the following data Is se
cured, showing the general plan of
.he Harriman system to reduce Its
grades by adopting water grade
routes, etc.:
"From Salt Lake City the Oregon
Short Lin a runs north to Pocatello,
Idaho. Here it connects with a cut
sff from Green River, Wyoming. That
part of this road btw33u Granger
md Pocatello ha ha l developed to
he highest possible standard of rail
oad perf jciion. Its maximum grade
s one pir cent. At llemroerer, which
i great coal-producing section, It
i possible to take a train of 3,000
ons and haul It to Pocatello, 200
niles away, with but one locomotive,
rom Ogden to Pocatello the line has
a maximum grade of 37 feet to the
mile. From Pocatello the line
crosses the state of Idaho to Hunting
ton. Oregon, with a maximum grade
ot one P3r cent. Every foot of this
line has been thoroughly ballasted.
Kighty-pound rails have been ln
stiilled from Salt Lake City to Poca
tello and continued on the branch
Una to Dutte, Montana, Ninety
pound rails have bejn Installed from
Granger to Pocatello, whereas, when
Mr. Harriman took hold of this line,
th3 rails weighed from 52 to 60
pounds. From Pocatello to Huntlng
'.oii the rails now used weigh from
70 to 80 pounds. The3e are now be
ins renewed frequently and the corn
puny Is now pursuing the policy of
uuing tie plates on every new tie In
italled. Automatic signals have been
lnntalled from Granger to Pocatello.
Similar signals are also In place
from Huntington to Nampa. Double
tracking Is In progress between
Green river and Granger, some 30
miles.
"At the present time the Oregon
Short Line is constructing a new
branch from Huntington, Oregon,
down the valley of the Snake river,
designed eventually to extend to Lew
lston, connecting there with the Ore
jon Railroad & Navigation company
and probably become a through trans
continental line. This would give the
company a water grade all the way
from Salt Lake City to Portland.
Fifty-nine miles of this line have
been authorized, and twenty-five
miles have been graded. This con
struction Is made necessary by the
fact that the prefent grade from
Huntlniton, going west across the
Blue mountains. Is sometimes as
much as 106 feet to the mile, thus
rendering conditions of transporta
tion extremely expensive.

extension of its branch from Elgin,
Oregon, to Joseph, a distance of 63
milea. After completion this line
will tap an exceptionally rich agricul
tural section. To the north Is the
great Palouse country of Washing
ton, wonderfully productive In wheat.
"The line of the O'. R. & N. be
tween Huntington and Portland pre
sents some of the most difficult oper
ating problems on the Harriman sys
tem. From The Da'.l33 to Portland, a dis
tance of 88 milej, the old line was
full of curves. The company has,
however, been removing both curva
ture and heavy grades, as well as
Improving the track, A total of
about $1,500,000 ha3 now bean spent
In this direction. About 227 miles of
the finest . ballast ha3 been placed
on this route from Huntington to
Portland. From The Dalle3 to Port
land the longest stretch of straight
track, at the present time, amounts
to two miles. In one Improvement,
however, now under way between
Troutdale and Bonneville, a distance
of 17.48 miles, the reduction in curv
ature will amount to 1454 degrees, 51
minutes. The amount of bridging Is
also being largely reduced. Five
years ago there were seven and one
half miles of bridges between Port
land and The Dalle3. This has now
been reduced to about half a mile.
All the bridges which remain are of
the finest steel construction. The
entire line from Huntington to Port
land has been equipped with auto
matic block signals."
Weiser a Division.
Relative to the construction of the
Lewiston-Huntlngton line, the Weiser
Signal says:
"It Is reported on good authority
that early in the spring the Oregon
Short Line will make Weiser a divis
ion point, removing the repair shops
and round house from Huntington,
Oregon, to this city. This action is
made necessary on the part of the
railroad company on account of the
opening of the new Snake river di
vision, running from Huntington, on
the Oregon side of the Snake, which
will be completed and' in operation
within a short time as far as Home
stead, Oregon, where is located the
celebrated Iron Dyke mine. This will
give the big copper and gold mine3
on both sides of the river a tremen
dous advantage in shipping their
ore3 to the smelters. The road will
be at once pushed on through th'e
Box canyon to Lewltson, Ida., which
will, of course, be the next division
point on the O. R. & N.
"The opening of this line through
to Lewlston means much to the peo
ple of southern Idaho. In the first
place It will shorten the distance
from Boise to all points In north-
arn Idaho, and will make the rail
road fare less than half what It is
at present. Passengers now have to
go via Pendleton and Riparia, chang
ing cars twice en route. The man
agers of the Harriman system of
railroads In the northwest state that
it is their Intention to give the
people of Idaho and Oregon the very
best possible service at the least
possible cost."
