day afternoon at 4 o'clock, Rev. W.

The Bliss Electrical school at
Washington, D. C, of which Leo For
sythe is a student, burned to the
ground early Friday morning of last
week, and the 2!)0 students were
compelled to flee for their lives In
their night clothing. E. J. Forsythe
received a telegra-.n from his son tell
ing of his safety. Owing to the
crowded condition of the school, Leo
und another young man roomed away
from the main building and bo their
loss will be comparatively small.

The Midland Jubilee Singers, the
most popular uttractlon visiting En
terprise during last season, will be
the secjnd attraction on the Lyceum
course, coming to the opera house on
Friday evening of next week, Novem
ber 20. The program will be entirely
changed from last season, so that ev
erything will be new. Season ticket
holders may reserve their seats on
and after Saturday next. The gener
al public, on and after Monday next.

Service Inaugurated to La Grande
Saturday Rusliing Work On
Depot.
Regular train sjrvice was inaugu
rated betwe3n Enterprise and La
Grande, Saturday, A train of two
coaches, baggage and mail car ar
rived from La Grande Friday night,
and left on schedule time, 8:30
o'clock, this morning. The train was
in charge of Conductor Jake Gulling,
and was pulled by engine No. 103.
The Inbound train Is due to arrive
at Enterprise at 2:30 p. m. The ser
vice will probably be extended to Jo
seph in a wesk or tan days. A larg
iieph in a week or 10 days. A large
force of men are ballasting the track
above this city. The maiis will con
tinue to come by a.aga from Wal
lowa for the present, but the railroad
will take o-e.' the contract a little
later.
W. J. Dedman of Portland is act
lag as operator until the arrival of
A. G. Norman, the station agent who
is expected in a few days. A box
car is being used for the office tem
porarily, but a gang of carpenters
under Contractor C. S. Fisher is
rushing work on the depot, which
will be 2lx61V4 feJt In size and two
iitorles high. It Is a duplicate of the
depot erected at Wallowa, and the
one In Joseph will be of the same

"Water Grade" Route.
There was a fairy story in Wed
nesday's Oregon! an to the effect that
Joseph was not t3 ba the terminus
but that the Wallowa road would be
extended to Snake river to meet the
line building from Huntington, thus
the Blue Monntains' If the fellow
giving a "water grade" route around
who wrote It ever seas the country
between Joseph and Snake river that
phrase "water grade" will haunt him
like a bad dream.

thrown Dr. Ault, master of the feast
and George Mitchell whose skill as
chef made every course a culinary
success.
Extra copies of the program and
menu folders were eagerly requested.
The banquet hall decorations were In
charge of J. B. Selbert. W. I. Calvin
and assistants, and they were all
right, too.

The last of the men who took hogs
to Wallowa for W. H. Baker re
turned Saturday. Theodore Conrad
came In by way of Enterprise to pay
his taxes the roads were better that
way anyway.
Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Locke and son
Eddie started for the Wallowa valley
Saturday. From there the lady and
son Intended to take the train for
Turlock, Cal. The young man has
property Interests there and also
goes on account of ill health.
