OREGON AND WASHINGTON
LEAD IN LUMBER CUT
Washington, D. C. Sept. 7 Fig
ures of the lumber cut in 1907 com
piled by the bureau of the census
and the forest service showed the
largest total ever reported In the
United States, exceeding by over 7
per cent the cut reported for 1906,
until then the record year. This
does not necessarily show a largei
xctual cut than In 1906, for the re
urns obtained Ian year were mon
oniplete than ever before. The fig-
ires themselves disclose some inter
esting facts.
In 1907, 28,830 mills made returns
md thelT production was over 40 bil
lon feet of lumber. This is believed
o Include 95 per cent of the actual
ut. In 1906, 22,398 mills reported
ibout 37V2 billion feet. Since ac-
ording to these figures nearly 29
)er cent more mills reported last
fear than the year before, while the
ncrease In production was only a lit-
ie over 7 per cent, It might be
bought that the amount actually
nanufactured must have been great
ir In the earlier year. This, how
sver, would be a too hasty Inference
or It Is almost wholly among mills
f small Individual output that the
ain in the number of establishments
eportlng has bean made.
A classification of the returns by
itates and regions throws addltiona.
Ight on the situation. Individual
hanges, as for example the remark-
ible rise of Texas from eighth tc
bird place amo.ig the lumber-produc-ng
states, are doubtless accounted
or primarily by the greater accuracy
f the 1907 figures; but in the ma
orlty of cases the advances and de
lines can be traced to specific in
fluences. I
Before the year closed the general
business depression was severely felt
n the lumber Industry. It was not,
however, the most important cause
3f a falling off in the production oi
-he year where a falling off oc-
urred. For decline In production
ook place only In certain regions
Die South Is the region of greatest
ictivlty in lumber production, ant
,'ellow pine the most Important
ood, forming 33 per cent of the
jntlre cut of the country. The cut
)f yellow pine reported shows an
ncrease of 13 per cent over that ol
1906. In the early part of the yeai
many of the southern mills cut sc
heavily that, In, spite of the curtail
id output which followed the bus!
tiess disturbance later, the total was
greater than ever before. But in both
the Lake states and the Northwest
a smaller cut was reported than foi
1906, though the number of mills re
porting Increased.
In the Lake states the falling off
evinced the waning supply of white
pine. Michigan, which for many yeart
led all the staler in lumber produc
Mon, and then gave way to Wlscon
iln, sank In 1907 from fourth to sev
snth. place, while Wisconsin wen
from third to fifth. Minnesota an
late as 1905 held fourth place. Last
year It went from seventh to ninth
It was not until the later 90's that
'.he South displaced this group o
states as the most important source
3f lumber supply. Since southern
pine Is abundant In all the Atlantic
coast states from the Carolinas tc
Texas, the region as a whole wll
doubtless maintain Its leading posl
tion, for some years, In spite of the
fact that at the present rate the
bulk of th timber will be gone In an
other decade; but In totals of pro
ductlon by Individual states the lead
ershlp has since 1905 been held by
Washington.
The figures of production sho
that during 1907 Washington fell ofl
very decidedly from Its huge cut o
1906, while Its si -iter state Oregon
Is credited with a slight Increase in
iu total. In the early part of. the
year Washington suffered from
car shortage, and at the end the
combined effects of business disturb
anco and higher freight rates hat
brought the Industry almost to paral
ysls. Oregon kept up Its cut be
cause of its larger proportion
coastwise and foreign trade. These
two states together produced more
lumber than any other two statei
in the Union.
It is a striking fact that though
