Mrs. A. E. Hartley died nt her home
seven miles northwest of Ki terprise,
Tuesday night, leaving a newly born
iu fa nt daughter. Funeral will be held
at Lostina today, Rev. S. C. Adams officiating,
J. B. Seibert returned Monday
night from Republic, Wash., where he
was called by the murder of his
brother, R. D. Seibert, a week ago
lats Saturday. The report or me
shooting in last week's News Record
was substantially correct. The prov
ocation for the murder happened on
the Fourth of July at Republic,
where Mr. Seibert wa acting as dep
uty marshal and aided by another
deputy he took a gun away from the
copvlct Phillips. vlhe latter swore he
he would get even, and had Seibert
covered with bis Winchester as the
four horse team that Seibert was
driving hove in sight on the river
road about 20 miles from Republic.
The bullet struck Seibert in the abdo
men and he lived only 30 minutes. A
big posse has been hunting for the
murderer but up to the time J. B
Seibert left the desperado was still
at large. The funeral of the murder
ed man was held Tuesday and was
very largely attended, the deceased
being well thought or up there.

market away down, the only active
demand being for a cheap grade. The
poor crops and hard times are re
sponpible. The wheat crop in that
bc-ttlon is only 60 per cent of nor
mal. Everywhere were men looking
for work. Movers' outfits were
passed going In all directions, and
with every evidence of poverty and
distress. "Wallowa county looks bet
ter than ever to me," said Mr. Riley
