CROP OF 1908 BANNER ,
AGRICULTURAL OUTPUT
The greatest crops ever produced
by any one country In the history oi
the world Is the estimate placed on
the crop of 1908 In the United Statei
by Henry Clews, the wizard of Wal.
street, and to this enormous crop is
due the rapid improvement in the
financial condition of the country.
Mr. Clews says:
Financial conditions continue t
show steady Improvement, chlefl)
owing to favorable crop prospects
easy money and--a more hopeful feel
Ing In business circles.
Our financial leaders and captalm
of Industry are all becoming more
and more optimistic in their opln
Ions. Depression is slowly but grad
ually disappearing, and evidence o
Improvement are visible in the dl
minlshlng number of Idle cars, in the
somewhat better orders for steel, in
a partial revival of building, and in r
steadier demand for merchandise lr
many of the leading markets.
Of course business Is still very
quiet, and In volume much below
that of a year ago. But the fact It
true, nevertheless, that depression 1:
waning, and that we are fairly start
ed on the road to recovery, with nt
prospect of another panic in sight,
because 'of the thoroughness of re
cent liquidations.
It may be some time before the
activity of 1907 Is regained, but the
recovery should be more rapid than
usual because the country generally
Is not suffering from over productloi
as during the previous panic, and ere
long our Industries must restart tc
prevent an actual scarcity of mer
chandise if Dresent contraction . is
persisted in.
The most stimulating element In
the situation at present is the crop
outlook. Our weather during the
past two weeks continued favorable
and condition of the crops has cor
respondlngly improved.
The corn crop this year, according
to present promise will yield 2,700,
000,000 bushels, which at the Septem
ber option price of 62 cents would be
valued at $1,700,000,000. The wheal
crop, with an Indicated yield of 675,-
000,000 bushels at 93 cents per bush
el would amount to $627,000,000.
The jcotton crop, which promise-
13,000,000 bales at 9'i cents woulc
yield about $600,000,000. The oat anc
hay crops now' out of danger, are
record breakers in quantity and qual
ity. Last year these two crops were
valued at over $1,000,000,000, and thU
year that sum will be further ex
ceeded. All the crops of 1907 were
estimated by the department of agri
culture at a valuation of $7,412,
000,000 on the farmland in view oi
the larger yield this year, and the
good prices generally obtained, it 1:
quite reasonable to expect that oui
farmers this year will produce new
wealth worth at least $8,000,000,000;
the largest sum ever realized In one
year by this country or any othei
from agricultural products.
