TRIP Tt THE NORTH COUNTRY
(Continued from last week.)
The road from Flora to Troy ha?
been greatly improved during the
last year. Supervisor Mench has
cut down the big trees that ob
strut ted the highway in his district;
the Tfoy hill grade has been reduced
until loads twice as heavy as former
ly may be hauled up It, and the cut
off at the Yager hill saves both dls
tatice and a heavy pull up one hill.
There Is room for big Improvement
still, (especially in widening the road
bed and providing turn-outs on the
road alone the canyon side wes
from the foot of the Yager hill;
also in the top half of the Troy
hill. It certainly looks that a bet
ter road and grade could be made at
the top of the Troy hill and thut
avoid the precipitous descent ove
the rocks.
Speaking of roads, what we have
to say at this time may as well be
finished in this place. To the New'e
Record it seems the time is ripe
and the need pressing for some
county aid to the road going ui
to Grouse from Troy. A few hun
dred dollars would materially reduce
grades there. That road was one ot
the first laid out in that country and
the time is approaching Is almos
here when It will be a heavily trav
eled highway. Right now, it Is the
only road that glve3 the prosperouf
farmers of Grouse and Bartlett ac
cess to the remainder of Wallowe
county.
There Is a proposition afoot t
build another "Troy hill" road up ou'
of , Grande Ronde river canyon r
few miles above Troy. Without en
terlng in the merits or demerits o
that particular road, it would seeir
full time to stop building roads ui
precipitous sides of mountains wher
roads of easy grades reaching the
same objective points, could be con
structed up the - canyons at the same
lor. less cost. Every person the wrl
ter nas talked to In the North Coun
try. who Is acquainted with Courtney,
Mud Creek and other canvons run
ning up from the Grande Ronde
river, says they are practical road
ways. Courtney, especially., Is cltee
as ; a way provide'! by nature foi
egress from the Grande Ronde can
yon to the divide running from Wal
Iowa Valley on the south to the
vvaHnington state line on the north.
It Is claimed a Kood waKon road
with easy grades, nowhere over f
or 6 per cent., can be constructor"
irom the Grande Ronde river to oi
near Red Fir, for $100 a mile. I
this Is true, It would seem the heleh
of folly to Bpend thousands of dol
lars ;to blast out a ilg-zag up a moun
tain side. If the people of Grouse
narthstt. Eden. Lo3t Prairie th v&l
leys of the Wenaha and Grande
rtonae are given an easy grade out
let td Red Fir or Sled Springs, they
will be nearly equally distant frorr
an vvaiiowa valley points, thus serv
Ing trie greatest goad to the greatest
iiuinuer.

THE WALLOWA COUNTRY
COMING INTO HER OWN
There was a finely descriptive ar
ticle of the Wallowa valley in the
Portland Journal of July 19, written
by Lulu R. Loretiz of Pendleton.
Miss Lorenz, who Is a reporter on
the East Oregonian, visited during
her vacation several weeks ago. at
the Streeter-Bryan camp Just above
Enterprise. She was enraptured with
the scenery and climate of this val
ley, and tells the Journal readers In
charming style of its beauty and
predicts a great industrial and com
mercial future. After reciting the
wealth of the county In agriculture
livestock and minerals, she closet
with the following about the towns
which aside from a mistake as tc
the kind of building stone used. in
Enterprise, and erecting the court
house ahead of time, is all true tc
facts:
"There are nine very enterprls
lng citizens living In the towns o
Joseph, Enterprise, Wallowa an
other towns In the county, most o;
he business men in these towns hav
lng lived there for years and have
grown wealthy In many Instances
Enterprise, the countyseat, has Borne
of the most beautiful buildings in the
state, the courthouse, high school ant
other buildings having been con
structed from granite which Is found j
a short distance from Enterprise, and
It is suitable for building purposes.'
Quarries of marble, as well as gold
and copper mines, all wait the Incoro- j
Ing of the railroad, and these towns
which will all be on the line of the
road, will become centers ot industry
and population of Importance to the
itate of Oregon."
