another town, and these two are the
only ones before the Republican voters
of the district.
Since the district will look to Joseph
for the candidate, the H 'J raid proposes
to state in an editorial manner where
Joseph stands at between these candi
dates, and why the Joseph favorite
should be nominated.
The Herald asserts that Mr. Eberhard
is the favorite here in Joseph aud vicin
ity, where both candidates live and are
known, by something like two to one.
It is also a fait that not oue prom
inent Republican in thli vicinity is
openly opposing Etwrhard.
Besides these facts, there are other
reason i why he is entitled to the noin
inatiou :
1st. His especial fitness for tbe posi
tion, by reasou of his legislative experi
ence, and his large acquaintanceship
ever the state.
2nd. His knowledge cf the law,
coupled with the fact that he is a deep
student of legal and public affairs.
Sd. His frankness with the people
and his expressed willingness to trust
them.
4th. His enviable record as a public
official and the confidence the people
have io him ; and also his reputation
for integrity aDd his spotless personal
character.
Mr. Eberhard resided over three
years at Salem, took the university law
course there, and at the last legislature
was chief clerk to the important com
mittee of judiciary of the House. He
is acknowledged by all to be among the
leadiug attorneys of Wallowa county,
haviug three cases on the civil docket
at the last term, while his opponent
had none. Ijocallv. he has been en

Old Party Bosses
Against H. M. Cake
Antagoniiitio to the verge of bitter
ness, remnants of the old machine
which once dominated Oregon politics
have taken up the flgrt for the defeat
of Statement No. 1 and all who favor
that method.
Iu Portland and the other large olties
of the state, the machine crowd is cen
tering its fight upon II. M. Cake, candi
date for the Republican nomination tor
United States senator. Mr. Cake is a
firm believer in the popular election of
United States senators and because of
his belief in the people, has incurred
the enmity of the old machine politi
cians. Those who are close to the situ
ation, however, believe that the ma
chine fight against Mr. Cake, is the
best thing that could happen for his
oamnaisn.
The people of Oregon expressed by
their adoption of the primary law and
Statement No. 1, what they thought of
machine methods. The old system had
brought shame and disgrace upon the
state had made the City of Salem
almost a Gomorrah in the way of politi
cal wickedness. Periodicals and news
papers of national circulation pointed
to our state as one of sodden political
corruption, of disgraceful scandals.
It is in the hope of reviving this old
method by the defeat of Statemont No.
1 and of Mr. Cake, that the machine
politicians have started such a bitter
crusade against this new law. Indeed
it is their only hope. Under the pres
ent system, they are without a job. It
is impossible for one dictator to sit in
bis offloe and say what shall and shall
not be done by the people of Oregon.
No longer is a saturnalia of bribery and
corruption possible in Salem.
Evidences of this hostility on the
part of the "system" have been appar
entlu various towns where Mr. Cake
has spoken during his present itinerary
Large crowds have flooked to hear him,
but conspicuous by their absence, were
the old-time leaders. And In this con
nection it is a faot worth mentioning
that most of these" ai tagonlstic politi
cians are either office holders or have
some claim upon those who are at pres
ent in office.
The people who arc rallying to Mr
Cake's standard are those Ro ublicans
who are intensely hytil to their party
but who resent any such dictatorial
methods as the old machine was wont
to use.
It is a foregone conclusion that State
ment No. 1 will prevail In Oregon at the
coming election. It is also a foregone
lonclusion that Mr. CaRe, .the only real
active supporter of this measure, will be
elected if the Republican voters of this
state do their duty and there is no room
for doubt but that they will peiform
that duty. ,
Game Laws.

Announcement of hi candidacy was
made by Mr. Eberhard o'er a month
clean op tbe streets and alleys adjoining before that of his opponent. He was
their property. All persons throwing among tbe first in the state to subscribe
tefose into streets and alleys are liable to Statement No. 1, and be went fur
