FLORA SIFTINGS
Flora, Jan. 20 The literary is grow
ing btt terns it grows older. A fine
program Friday night. The M. V. A.
entertainment was a grand hit. About
500. people were present to hear the
following program:
Music, address by C. II. Men, music,
recitation by Gale Johnson, address by
Ike Austin, music, recitation by Miss
Ethel Dale, banjo music by Etlie
Meyerwj recitation by E. K. Allen,
music, comic recitation by O.- C.
Moore, recitation by Miss Lelali 'Vie,
music, drill by the M. W. team com
manded by T. M. Gilmore, Ihis was
very fine; a play of six scenes rep
presentihg the principles of the M. Y
A. was grand. It was wiitten by C.
H. Allen and played by the members
of the lodge. or course this was
Btrictly home talent. I wish every
woodman could have seen this play,
it surely would have made them
stronger in the faith. After the play,
a very enjoyable treat of candies,, nuts
and apples were served by the M.- W.
team, plenty for every one,
O. P. Miller's have visitors from
Portland and northern Idaho.
Tne league supper was a success. A
good crowd and plenty of well filled
boxes. . .
Mrs. Elmer Moore has the measles.
The Christian, order is completing
their church 'which will add to church
facilities in Flora.
Alfred Holmes, teacher of Arko,
after hearing the high, school debate
at Enterprise, had Arko literary society
challenge the Flora school on this
question: "Resolved That the Indian
has a Greater Right to Complain of
Mistreatment by the Government than
the Negro has to Complain." Arko
from Arko.
Mrs. O. A. Shuiiiau has been on the
sick list this week but is now improv
ing.
Everybody was agreeably surprhed
at the outcome of the high school de
bate. When they heard there was one
or two who went from the north end,
they said if they had known it they
would have gone too.
There were several from Arko who
attended the leap year basket social of
the Epworth League at Flora, Wednes
day night. Some of the boys took
baskets. It was real fun to watch the
ladies buy the baskets. The proceeds
were something over f 10.
The pupils of Arko are talking of
giving a play in the near future. Tliey
have gone so far as to order a few sam
ples. I hope it will be a success,
I am pleased to announce that the
Oliver children are improving and
hope they will bo able to return to
school in a few days.
Arko school was favored with a
visitor Wednesday Miss Florence
Yager, who contemplates entering the
eighth grade class.
What is the matter with our division
manager. We have not heard the least
thing about bin arrangements for the
declamatory contest.

Gns Smith has moved to tha Frank

others of our citizens will move in the
near future; as they haxe received
notices from the U.'S. department of

some of the parties have been living on
their claims three or four years and Gus
Smith's place was on surveyed land and
filed on two years ago; and his place is
surrounded bv deeded lands; he and
two others were allowed to hold 40
each, and one ten acies, leaving three
vithout any. They will all abandon
tbeir claims and embark for other parts

We don't object to a forest reserve

It is true the land which they loeati d
