Pendleton Paper Is Sore.
The Pendleton K;it Oreoniaii showed a contPiriit:hle spirit in
endeavoring to find excuses for its high school debating team's defeat
at Euttrpiise l casting aspersions on the judes, whom, it pays, came
from ' the rern-ses of Wallowi county," and were in favor of govern
ment ovnerhli!i. Both statements aro falsehoods and the East Orego
nian kn w,-ir ouj'.lit ti have known, the former was untrue, when it
printi d it.
All thru- judges are residents of Union county; none is a believer
in fjovei miictit ownership; and iho one vote for 1'endUton was given y
a yimtii'man w ho is a candida'e for oflice and in peeking the suffrages
of Wallowa county voters. Those facts sneak eloquently of the im
partiality of the judges, as well as of the decidul superiority of the
Wallow ! County deleters The truth is, the local team made and
cliu.'-hcd two points to one lv the Pendleton train.
'I he Pendleton team and I'sof. Landers showed a spt rtmanship
md courage in defeat that should shime their home paper. They
were gentlemen who fought, niiniiilly on t.!u ik side of the question,
and acknowledged they were fairly and squanly beaten.
The East Oregoriian it- as childish ami contemptible as was the
Eugene audience when its team was beaten by Lebanon.

J. W. Kkiins,
County Superintendent of Schools.
With its b'i! debt and heavy tax burden, Union county has a dark
outlook says the I.a Grande Star, and it adds that it is no wonder real
estate firms are going out of business there. The contrast is bright
here. The real estate men are making sales because a county out of
debt and with a low tax levy is a mighty attractive proposition to
settlers. With the best high tcho-d in Eastern Oregon, all paid . for,
and liberal appropriations for good roads, the combination ifl a great
booster. . Hut the prestnt county court will not get the praise-K de
serves until misrepresentation of its work ceases to serve selfish aims.
when it conies in. Shuv the debt onto
the next generation. The county can
borrow money at 6 per cent and we
have to pay 10. Of course if we ever
pay oat of djbt we w ill have to pay out
with 10 per cent money. But that is
neither here nor there.
I have been readin' tbe San, and to
my n ition Mr. Jonas knows abont how
he county ought to bo run. He is an
ilr pioneer of the county, havin' lived
tuuvigst us nigh onto two or three
years. He is also a t, ixpaver of ths
county. For my part I would like to
gee him and Jilr. Stabbi and Mr. Staid

missioners. Lit them run on th) plat
form: "No taxes, a j schools, an.l agio

The Elgin Recorder paid l ist week: "Numerous editorials appear
ing in some of the Wallowa county papers regarding their county
affairs are disgusting in the extreme. Never a week pauses but what
a fat, juicy lemon ir handed the county com t, and still the (Jounty is
out of debt and the people have only a 11 m 11 tax to pay this year."
A former Enterprise man now a resident of a boom town in Cali
fornia writes: ''Send me a drink of good water and something to
keep off the mosquitoes." A sample of our winter weather would add
the finishing touch to that man's regret in leav.ng good old Wallowa.

Editor News Record: Mr. Jonas, in
his piper, Tne Wallowa Sun, asks,
"And now, Mr. Yoter, which would vou

I would sooner pay the former. To
make thi year's tax as low as it -ought

or ti'3' mills. This is the way I cypher!
it out: 3 mills for common school, 2 i
mills fi-r tho state, and la' mills to pay I
the county officers. This I guess we'
have got to levy according to the slate
law. We don't need auythiug for roads,
