Prof. Ambrolse Tuinell resigned

Roy Middles worth, who worked for
Fred Fulconer two ears ago, was
killed at Hillsboro, HI , lVcember 20.

The sentiment of the meeting was for
a paid secretary and that it would he

By the by-laws of the club, the execu
tive committee consists of eleven mem-be-s,

debate, the club discussed the public

Circuit court convened Monday in
speiial session, Judge Craw ford presid
ing. The escape of Elliott and Logan
from jail cleared the docket of cases
ready for immediate jury trial and all
jurymen who reside near Enterprise
were excused, and those irom a distance
given choice of remaining hero or going
home but returning Saturday when the
trial of tieorgo B. Clark for statutory
offense will be begun. Judge Fee is
associated with 1). W. Sheahan -in the
de'enscand Burleigh & Boyd with the
district attorney iu the prosecution.
Motion for continuance was argued and
denied.
Demurrer to complaint in Ready vs.
Smith sustained with leave to file
amended bill. Trial set for Friday.

sustained. Later it was agreed to loavo

who heard the case Tuesday night and
deci led that Miss Applegate ell the HO

given until October to pay for it.
Escape From Jail.
fleorse Logan and M. D. Elliott
escaped from the county jail Thursday
night of last week by the old familiar
way where two squads had gone before.
Tho patchwork flooring was kicked,

crawl and liberty. No news, aud
precious few care if they ever come
back. Elliott had been a boarder on
the county for many months tinder a
charge of jumping a board hill and
stealing a suitcase. Logan v as mixed
up in the fracas at Beaudoin's t hearing
plant. The men were not put in the
cage as there wa-J no way of warming it
The county court is having a 4-inch fir

Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Poley have gone
on a two weeks' visit among friends and
relatives near Asotin, Wash.
Roy Ha in left . Monday morning for
Pendleton . where he will resu me his
commercial school studies.
Hascall Cole returned Friday from
California where he went to spend the
winter. He says he is glad to be in
Wallowa n;wa and prefers our little
valley to the warm state of California.
Dr.JIockett was called from Enter
prise Pi i.lay evening to attend the bed
side of O. E. Hulse'a infant daughter.
The child is now improving.
Mrs. T. M. Willett of Liberty was
visiting friends and relatives in this
city last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Fleener left Saturday
on a business trip to Athena. They
will be gone some time visiting friends
and relatives along the way. While on
their way to Elgin Mrs. Fleenor lost
her purse containing twenty-five dollars.
Schrol began Monday as usual, only
each room was crowded more than it
had been for several years. Tho teach
ers are finding the work very heavy
fince the holidays as all classes have
increased to nearly twice their former
number. Pupile are doing better work,
however, than they did b? fore Christ
mas, and all seem to take more interest
in their studies.
Robert Lavis, who has been in tho
employ of Mr. Melquist of Baker City,
has returned. . He says Mr. Melquist
is not satisfied with his work in Baker
and will return here in tho near future.

Gatch of Salem was in enterprise cue

Mr. Gatch is an optimist and is quite
enthusiastic over financial prospects.
He says the bankers in tho larger
towes and cities are already doing busi
ness as if no panic bad occurred, and
that in fix mon'hs the squeeze will be
forgotten. As showing how Oreson is
fenced in by Harrinmu Mr. Gatch says
in visiting the national banks o' this
tnte be is compellod to travel 1400
miles by stage, that be reaches every
national bank in Montana with only 32
miles of stage travel, and every national
bank in Washington without a mile of
stage travel.

Good music was afforded by home talent
and everyone enjoyed the evening very
much. A good supper was given at the
Womack restaurant.
N. J. Cook left Friday enronte for
Missouri whero he expects to unite in
the holy bonds of wedlock with one of
the fairer sex of that state. He will
return with his bride in two or three
weeks. They will make their home
in Wallowa county. He is a well
known farmer ot Lostine and the people
of this vicinity unite in extending thorn
their hearty congratulations for future
prosperity and happiness. We ladies
are already beginning to feel that Leap
Year will do much for the lonely bach
elor.
The football game at Wallowa New
Years day between Wallowa and Los
tine was another victory fo: the local
team, the scoro being two to nothing.
It was played by tho best that either
town could afford and was so closely
contested that for awhile it seemed as
if neither side would tooio. Finally
Lostine madj a Fafely counting them
two and the game ended with no more
tallies cn either side. By all who
witnessed tho tussle it was thought to
be the hardest game ever pla-ed in tho
county. Tho Lostine' team averaged
one hundred forty-six pounds; and the
Wallowa one hundr d forty-three.
The Lostine Kebekah Lodge No. 158
met and in regular form installed the

Rett Jackson of Joseph who has been
attending the La Grando high pchool
has enrolled in the eleventh grade here.
Everything is about in readiness for
the debate with the Tendleton high
school. This will take place in the
opera house on Saturday evening, Jan
nary eighteenth. The question is:

Miss Carrine Bue of Trout Creek and
Charles Oakes of this city enrolled in

DEATH RECORD.
Riohard Harley Burdett died Sunday
aged tix years and eleven months
Interment took place Tuesday in the
Joseph cemetery, Rev. F. G. Potter
speaking appropriate words from the
twelfth chapter of Second Samuel, be
ginnin with the eighteenth verse.
Richard was the second sen of D. S.
Burdett and only sm of Mrs. Anna
Burdett, he having a son by a former
w ife. They are well known residen ts of
the valley between Enterprise a d
Joseph. The cause of the boy's death
was spasmodic croup. The parerjts
have the sincere sympathy of the eutire
community.
Joel, seven year old son of Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Scott of Upper Trairie
Creek, died Wednesday morning.. The
little fellow had teen an invalid from
birth; Funeral w ill be held probably
Friday.
