Traveler's Notes
In North Country
The main highway lending to the
North country has been traveled more
than ever before this fall, as nearly
the entire wheat crop of the fertile
Paradise firms has been brought to
mills in the valley, principally to the
E. M. & M. Co'h. Enterprise mill.
The well known Sled springs hotel,
ownod by the popular S. B. Connor, is
now conducted by Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Norton, who have leased it from Mr.
Connor. While at the hotel the other
day, a representative of the- News
Record met Isaac Bingaman of Inibler,
who was on his way in to his ranch.
He is going to paint the buildings on
his place if bad weather doesn't prevent.
Miss M. R. Applegato, pcmtrmstreea
at Appleton, is going to try for a prize
in the great $405 contest, and will
gladly forward subscriptions to the
News Record.

E. D. Southwick has been driving the
Wallowa-Paradiee mail route for his
son who has 'been ill of smallpox, but
the latter will resume the reins this
week, The horse that was so badly
burned iu the Straley barn tire is slowly
recovering and Mr. South wirk thinks it
will, in time, tie able to bear the
harness. E. D. Southwick is going to
try for a prize in the great contest, and

from the Fairview district.

Council Orders i
New Arc Light.
At a called meeting of the city
council Friday evening an arc light was
ordered placed at the corner of North
nnd Forsvthe streets. This is the corner
by C. W. Boatman's residence, and the
light will be not only a great conven
ience to the people residing in that part
of the city, but to travelers on the
Lostine road as well.
The application of F. I. Vergere for
permission for the B. M. &. M. Co. to
lay water pipes to his barn, was laid on
the table. J. C. Shackleford was
granted permission to excavate and
build a rack to wash buggies on in
front of his barn.

per from Prairie Creek, were visiting
at A. Wade's Sunday.
There will be a basket social in the
Alder church, Nov. 29. Everybody
invited to come and enjoy a good time.
Miss Stella Hooper of Joseph was a
visitor at the Alder Sunday school,
Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. James Carter and
daughter Edith were guests at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Litoh,

Indications of Coal.
While dleeine a well on his Trout
Creek farm four miles north of Enter
prise, Joe Allen struck indications of
coal at a depth of 40 feet. Strata of
brown and black rock of a soapstone
nature were passed through, that are
I said to usually overlay veins of coal.
Struck Good Water Vein.
O. C. Pchluer, who owns a fine ranch
south of Enterprise, has had a 40 foot
well driven on a small knoll near
his residence and struck a fine vein of
Water. Although there is only 15 feet
of water in the well, continuous pump
ing for hours does not lower the water
level perceptibly, says the Joseph
Herald. ' Mr. Schluer intends to build
a storage tank next summer and in
stall a gravity system ot water works in
his dwelling house, stables and feed
yards.
