Wallowa Gounty and
It's Many Resources
Wallowa County, one of the scenic Grande Ronde. There are thousands
wonders of the West. Grandeur! J of acres of Government lands within
Mystery! Beauty beyond compare! the borders of Wallowa valley, yet
Yet better than all these, and more subject to homestead. This land is
helpful, is the spirit of the Blue ; deep, rich and productive and each
Mountains. Its mountains are
grand as measured by the rule of
the Mighty Tii ree and it ban what
they have not the harmony of
peace. To the tired eye the gently
rounded forms speak of rest, its qui
et valleys tell their sweet story to
the weary mind and body. A price
less heretage it is t the hectic peo
ples of the great cities. And they
aro coming in here quite often now
departing singing the praises of
Wallowa valley and particularly of
this little city of Enterprise ; and
may their children's children possess
homestead usually contains living
water.
The county embraces every varie
ty of climate from snow capped
mountains to its warm valleys,
where apples, peaches, apricots and
grapes are almost a never failing
crop.
Its summers are warm with cool
nights; its winters are moderato and
equable.
The resources of the county are aa
diversified as its surface. In the
valleys and on the Grande Ronde,
Snake and Imnaha rivers fruits and
it unimpaired throughout alt time to I vegetation of all kinds abound. In
come
Wallowa county, Oregon, is situa
ted in the N. E. corner of the state,
and is a most inviting field for the
homeseeker. It is about 100 miles
square and has a population of 10,
000. It is new, prosperous and ever
growing ; iB settled mostly by east
ern emmigrants who, having grown
tired of cyclones, blizzards, ffialari,
high rents and other disadvantages
of the over crowded East, have beon
attracted to the free homesteads, rich
soil and healthy climate of Wallowa
county, as a most desirable place to
live forevor. In appearance Wal
lowa county is rough and uneven
and is divided by nature into moun
tains, hills and valleys. The moun
tains are imposing in their wealth
of scenic beauty and are valuable as
a summer range for stock and their
mines of precious metals. The hills
are level and undulating and pro
duce abundant crops of wheat, oats,
rye and barley, and the famous
bunch grass, on which vast herds of
stock thrive and grow fat, making
easy fortunes for their owners.
The valleys are well irrigated, rich
and productive, and in addition to
tho crops raised in "the hills" pro
duce immense yields of clover, timo
thy and alfalfa. The county is pur
ticalarly well adapted to fruit rais
ing; garden truck of all kinds do
the valley hogs, grasses, and grain of
all kinds make abundant yields; and
the hills and mountains furnish feed
for thousands of head of sheep, cat
tle and horses.
Lumber and mining industries in
Wallowa county are in their infancy;
but with the advent of the railroad,
these vast resources will receive the
attention they deserve.
Numerous quarries of fine marble,
granite and building stone have
been opened up and only await ship
ping facilities to be fully developed.
Land can yet be bought at very
reasonable prices but the price is
steadily advancing.
Wages range from 40 per month .
on the farm, to $8 per day for Bkilled
labor, And laboring men are always
in demand.
As a health resort, Wallowa valley
stands in a class by itself. Its high
altitude; pure, fresh air, warm Bum-
mer days, cool nights and refreshing
sleep, cold, crystal waters, and an
abundance of pure wholesome food,
has returned the bloom to many a
faded cheek, and the spark of life to
the weary eye. Many a person w ho
has dispaired of life, has found per
fect health in this valley.
There are five towns in the valley,
chief among them being Enterprise,
which is also the county seat. It is
trulv the "Queen City" of beautiful
exceedingly well. It is well watered Wallowa valley. It has a fine elec
by four rivers, numerous streams, I trio light system, water works, is in-
and fine springs; it has the heaviest
rainfall of any county iu the state
east of the Cascades.
The principle river is Wallowa, a
very rapid mountain stream, of
crystal clearness, whose swift flow
ing waters afford immense water
power, and flows for forty miles
through a valley as rich as the Nile,
turning tho wheels of machinery,
irrigating vast acres of fertile land
and finally emptying into the
corporated and has good city govern
ment. Wallowa county, with one
exception, is the only county in the
state that is entirely out of debt.
Enterprise has a fine system of
public schools, high school (just
being erected,) and four churches.
A conservative estimate places the
number of acres tributary to Enter
prise, at 4f0,000, with about 100,000
already under irrigation.
The Impressions of a Stranger
We think when we say that a more beautiful country than that
which we passed through on our way to Enterprise from Elgin can
hardly be found. Certainly nature has dealt kindly and bountifully
with the farmer of Wallowa County. Outside of the natural beauty of
the country, in various localitiee, through irrigation, it has blossomed
forth in golden grain.
Wallowa County, if we may judge, must be a good place to reside.
The livestock one sees, certainly makes one think of David, who
in biblical times spoke of his "Cattle on a thousand hills." Here we
see cattle, horses, sheep and hogs, fat, sleek and nearing the ready-for-market
stage. No county in the state, we will venture the assertion,
can show such handsome livestock as can Wallowa. We are not judg
ing from the aesthetic point of view, as the glory of mountains and
beauty of the rivers are patent to all who have been lucky enough to
view them.
Now a few words about Enterprise, the county seat and metropolis
of this county. Well situated, accessable from all points of the county,
this city was well selected. We were very favorably impressed with
the conmopolitan appearance of the city and the cordiality of its pros
perous citizens.
