The Olympla sailed from Cordova
at I o'clock Sunday night, h iving ar
rived from Seattle earlier In the day.
Although the night was clear and a
full moon shed a bright light, naviga
tion was made dangerous by CO
mil gale, which wu blowing from
the north.
Between 12 and 1 o'clock MomViy
morning the operator on duty at tho
navy wlrelena station picked up tha
distress signal of the Olympla. 11
answered at once. Operator Hayes,
on the Olympla, then sent an urgent
appeal for help, saying that the Olym
pla had struck on Bllgh Inland anil
was In an exposed position. Heavy
seas are breaking over her, mnkltig

Several vessels are on the way to
the assistance of the Olympla. Many
of these are small craft, and It Is
doubtful whether they will be able to
weather the furious gale.
