Friday noon, and a man working for him came to Ini- iii-ha bridge and telephoned V. R Holmes who sent out the doctor and his son Fred. They arrived at the camp Saturday night and remain ed with, hinn to .the end. The deceased was not only well known but was untversaHy esteemed and his many friends expressed deep sorrow. The men at the camp started! UP the trail out of the canyon, bearing the body. They were met part way out by J. A. Funk, who had been phoned the news. R. and Jane tGabriei) Holmes was born in Memphis, Tenia, February 17, 1861, and suom'.y after his birth his parents removed ibavk to the North on one of he last boats to make the I up-river trip before the outbreak of the greatj Civil war. ! In 1M3 the Hoimes family came '' across the plains to Bannock and i Virginia City, Mont, where there was great mining excitement ait that time. Afterwards the family removed by wagon to Salt Lake Ciity, Utah, whence to Walla Walia, coming thru southern Idaho, cross the Snake, up Powder Valley into the Grande Ronde and across the Blue Mountains. In 1868 the elder Hci'.mes brought his family to Cove and there made his home until his death alxut 20 years ago. His widow died in 1899. Charlie Holmes came to this coun ty first when only 18 years of age. His father and older brother were running stock in tills county. He took up land on Alder Slope a little later on, the place now owned by Sam Litch. Afterwards he went in to the cattle biisdne about 22 years ago buying his bro her George's place on Crow Crek, and has fol lowed the business ever since with good success. He built himself a fme new home oa his ranch a year or so ago. The deceased wa never marrtea. He had great affection for his nephew (Continued on last page.)
