Elmer Small, late of Caldwell, Ida., has been keeping the officers here abquts cui:e busv la'.ely. He is an andersizad 12 veir old boy, but active ts a fenet when it conies to gei ing away. He has made three es capes within a week and the Idaho iheriff will te lucky to get him .;ack home, Thursday. Elmer broke into a laundry, took .vhat change there was In the till nid smashed an adJiug machine un .ler the deluded notion it was a cash register. For all this he was sen--enced to the reiorm school. The iheriff left him at his parents' home Jiitil he was ready to take him to the school, but Elmer and hia sister .Slsie disappeared one night. Word was sent to Sheriff Marvin ind the lad was found at Wallowa jolng to school, while Elsie was .vorking in a hotel. The boy was rought to Enterprise Saturday by N D. Crof ut. He was so little and afraid -hat Charlie Giovannoni, the court .louse Janitor, slept with htm that wight in the jail. About 3:15 a. m. Charlio awoke, found his bedmate ione, and he locked in. The lad had taken the keys from Charlie's clothes about a quarter of au hour before, slipped out and locked the Joor. Charlie raised a big Jiulla Jaloo, hollering and shooting off his L.evolver, and was fhiallv released. Sheriff Marvin went to Wallowa lie next morning in an auto and reached there Just as Elmer, foot sore and weary, turned up Main itreet from the railroad track, down which he had tramped from Enter prise. Marvin s.arted with the lad on the afternoon train .Monday, but -he train was hardly out of Wallowa iefore. Elmer made a pretense of vnating a drink, then dashed out he door a:id off the train. Marvin .vis right after him, and captured llnr after a chort chase. He walk jd him to Lontine and came in a .ig the rest of the way. The Ada county sheriff will come or Elmer today. MAKE FINAL PROOF. A. Burleigh in his usual naterly style. Mr. Burleigh de oted the major part of his argu ment to proving by the testimony of itate officers of prohibition states, hat 6tate-wide prohibition is a suc :ess whereever given an honest aud air trial. He answered the argu ne.it that dlvea exist under prohi jition by proving they flourish even nore alongside the open saloon and inder strict regulation. The per sonal liberty plea, the so-called 'home rule" amendment and the jogie of the midnight search of pri .ate homes were shown to be spec ous and false. The address, was argumentative in iature, logical in arrangement and -lear and forcible iu delivery throug nit. LAFFERTY AT JOSEPH. A. W.
