A Beautiful Lake. rerhnps the most striking Instance to be seen In (he whole world of the wonderful apparent roloriug of bodies of water In the marvelnusly bountiful Blue 'lake In Switzerland. Encom passed on all sides by lofty mountiiin. their lower ranges luxuriantly clothed with verdure down to the edge of the water and adorned with many fine for est trees, while their uljclipr Hcclivliles are garbed in a mantle of eternal know, the little lake, nestling In Its deep hol low basin and protected from winds and storms. Is quite startling iu Km singular and strange beauty. The water, although really pure and color less, appears to te of a most vivid and Intense sky blue. Going Round th World. In sailing around the world east ward the days are each a III tie leuz tbuo Iweuty-four hours, according to the speed of the ship, as the kuii In met a little earlier every uioruing These little differences added together will amount to twenty-four hours This gives the sailors 'au extra duy- not lu Imagination, but as an actual fact They will have done an extra day's work, eaten au extra day's ratiou of food aud Imbilied au extra day's ul Iowa nee of grog. On the other hand. In sailing west ward the sun is overtaken a little each day, and so eacb day Is rather longer than twenty-four hours, aud clocks and watches are found to be too fast This also will amount lu sailing u round the world to the polut of departure to one whole day by which the reckoning has fallen In arrears. The eastern bound ship, then, has gained a day. and the western bound ship baa lost one. This strange fact, clearly work ed out leads to the apparent paradox that the first oamed ship bas a gain of two whole days over the latter. Up until about 1850 only placer or surface gold was mined that is, free gold, deposited In the beds of streams, lo sands aud to the crevices of rocks. Placer mining, mainly In new'uud re mote regions, still furnishes a material though not a large percentage of the world's output. Formerly the alluvial gold was separated from the saudx and gravels containing It by washing them iu pans, cradles, rockers aud sluices. In 1852 the hydraulic method was first employed iu Califorolu. By this nieaus a "giant" stream of water j turued against the side of a mountain I washes everytblug before It. The gold settles to the bottom of the tunnel or sluice through wblcb the gravel, saud and water Bow. In 1889 dredges or excavators were first used in AuRtra j Ua. Today steam and electric dredges ' produce a considerable portion of the J world's output.-Byron W. Holt in Ev- erybody's. ftm WHITB FRONT Livery, Feed and Sale Stable J R. L..
