HILL 10 BUILD
LI ACROSS STATE
RAILROAD SURE FROM ONTARIO
TO COOS BAY MOTORS ON
O. R. & N. R. R.
Portland, March 29 That James J.
Hill will buUd an east and west line
of railway across Central Oregon,
from Ontario to Coos Bay, was stated
on good authority during the past
week. The projected line will con
nect with the Grand Trunk, the
Hill road now being built up the
Deschutes, and with the Oregon Elec
tric in the Willamette Valley, be
lieved to be another Hill property.
This wlil mean a gridiron of new
railroads for Oregon, during the com
ing tew years that will bring about
a development In thie state never
before approached. All Central Ore
gon needs Is railroads; . it has ev
erything else but people and the rail
roads will bring them.
" An interurban service that is de
signed to meat the needs of the
cities of the state has just been
announced by the Harrfcmaa lines.
Beginning this week, gasoline motor
cars will be put to service on the
main line of the Southern' Pacific
between Ashland and Grants Pass
and another on the Springfield
branch between Albany and Spring
field. Another car of the same type
will be put on between Pendleton
and UmatiMa on the O. R. & N. with
in the coming weak. These Jnotof
cars are designed to handle the lo
oal business in the territory they
cover and serve the different commu
nities' much in the same way as In
erurbac electric trains. They have
been found very c en v en tent wherever
tried and will no doubt aid the de
velopment of the districts served to
i great extent.
Cattle and hogs have made new
records to the Portland' livestock
market during the past week- Hogs
3 old at the remarkable price of
$11.50 per 100 pounds, live weight,
ind steers of the best grade brought
6.75 per 100 pounds (Wallowa coun
ty cattle shipped from Enterprise).
Mutton also ' attained a . record, a
:ot of good grade lambs going at
$12 a 100 pounds, a good price
for any season.
Not For the ,Brarich.
Rumors that the gasoline motors
would be. installed on the Wallowa
county branch are groundless says
he La Grande Star. Officials of
-he railroad say the motors would
be Impracticable as they carry but
70 passengers and there Is hardly
ever a train on the branch that, does
not carry that many besides a large
amount of baggage, express and
mail. It would require several of
the cars to handle the business on
'.he branch

CqnBua Supervisor Sands Circular To
Prepare For Enumerator's
Visit
Census Supervisor Beach of this
district is sending out circulars of
Information to owners of live stock
in this county wherever he has been
able to secure the names. This cir
cular is to , prepare stock owners
tor the visit of the enumerator. For
the Information of those ,who fail to
t'eceive a. circular, it is herewith
printed in full:
Portland, March 23, ' Dear Sir
The proper method for securing
an accurate census of the live
itock in the states making use of
the public domain or range for the
Teeding of cattle and sheep has been
the subject of much consideration by
hose in charge of the thirteenth
census.
It has been decided by the Di
rector of the Censais that the enum
eration of live stock shall be under
the direction of the Supervisors of
he census. The plan, as agreed
upon, is to allow the enumerators
:o collect the statistics concerning
.ive stock on the general agricultur
al schedule at the same time that
they are engaged in collecting the
statistics concerning population and
agriculture.
As supervisor of census in your
district, I am very anxious to ob
tain a complete and accurate cen
us of live stock. This will be tm-
xtssible without the cooperation of
he live stock interests; and in or
ter that you may be prepared for
he visitof the .census enumerator,
which will be on April 15 or ehort
!y thereafter, I ara inclosing a copy
of the general agricultural schedule
on . which the enumerator will re
port your farm or ranch. I trust
irhat you will read the instructions
printed on this schedule and fill it
out as completely as you can in
advance of the 'enumerator's visit.
giving especial attention to the
number and value of live stock in
your possession.
You should report all domestic an
imals on your farm or ranch on
April 15, 1910. If you make use of
the public domain in connection
.with your farm or ranch, yoi should
report all domestic animals belong
ing to you and under your care on
that date, even though a part or all
of them are being grazed on the pub
lic domain, and are not kept, on
your farm or ranch. However, It
jou have given out any of your live
s ock to be taken care of on other
ranches or farms, you should not re
port such live stock on the schedule
sent you. They will be reported on
the ranch where they are kept and
not on your ranch.
The advance receipt of this sched
ule wil' not only give you an oppor
tunity to prepare careful answers to
the questions asked, but will save
both you and the enumerator con
siderable time when he calls to see
you. The information given, by you
io the enumerator will be held in
rtrict confidence. It will not be
;m parted to another branch of the
federal Government nor to any tax
assessor. L therefore, earnestly be
speak your assistance and coopera
tion. Very respectfully.

BEST LIME IN THE WORLD
MADE FROM BLACK MARBLE
NEAR HERE.
What is destined to be an indus
try: of no mean proportions is now
being developed near the mouth of
Hurricane canyon, jn3t southwest of
this city. Charles Christy has been
.burning a goad quality of lime In
.he canyon for several years, but
.ast summer he experimented with
;he well known black marble of
which there are Immense deposits
in the canyon. The result exceed
ed all expectations, the product be
ing a chalk white lime, almost, ab
solutely pure. It has been trledl and
ested both here at home and out
jide and the universal verdict is
'the best lime we ever used or flaw."
It is so free from Impurities that one
barrel of it goes as far a one and
a half barrels of ordinary lime.
A company has been formed to
exploit the deposits and Is knqwn
as the Black Marble Lime company,
composed of Mr. Christy and his son
Henry, and George Houser, a well
known capitalist.
One large kiln is already to op
eration and a carload of fire brick
recently arrived at this station with
which three new kilns will be built,
giving a capacity of from 15.000 to
20,000 barrels per year. Ed Eben of
Joseph has contracted to market
the entire product, and S. D. Kelt
ner has the sole sale of the lime
at Enterprise.
A car load of barrel staves has
also been received and shipments
will begin soon. Over 1000 tone of
the marble were gotten out the
past winter ready for burning. When
in full running the works will give
employment to 12 or 15 men. En
terprise will be the shipping point
of the lime.
The black marble will doubtless
3oon be quarried for other uses, as
it Is a beautiful stone and takes
readily a high po.lab.

NOTHING STOPS EASTERN
OREGON REAL ESTATE.
(From La Grande Observer.)
The Joseph line ' may be only a
branch road but it seems determined
not to be outdone in the matter of
.and slides by any trunk line that
sver saved ' 17 hours from Chicago
:o the coast.
.The road through the Elgin cab
yon has eenb in the front rank lately
with its little slide just about as
often as there was any trouble on
Me main line. It seems nothing
can stop the movement of Eastern
Oregon- real estate.

MY FAREWELL TO NEBRASKA.
Now friends here la Nebraska state,
Don't put it off until too late
To seek a good and quiet home,
But emigrate to Oregon,
So near the great Pacific Coast.
In summer time you will not roast;
The winters, there are short and mild
Can- be endured by any child.
The Cascades and the Mountain
Blue,- .
Afford- protection and scenery, too;
But cyclone caves do not adorn
The healthy state of Oregon. '
For health no other state excels;
But twenty feet they dig their wells;
To bore a hundred feet or more
Would be to find the precious ore.
i
The valleys there are long and wide,
And friends can live there side by
'side;
A fortune too for everyone
In the state of Oregon.
Through many states I've traveled
West
But Oregon I think the best.
Most any thing that can be grown,
Grows to the state of Oregon.
Now do not doubt my story true,
But emigrate, 'tis best for you,- .
To Enterprise, the thriving town
to the state of Oregon.
If once you'd see their fields of
grain,
Tou would not then longer remain '
Upon a poor Nebraska farm;
You'd emigrate to Oregon.
Tla there the streams with fish
abound.
And their farms the game surround;
So hand me down my good old gun
For I Am bound for Oregon.
The cyclone does not there appear,
Of storms neither dread nor fear.
The clouds doth give but gentle rain
Upon the fields of golden: grain.
The people are as good and kind
As to any state that you may find;
3o my advice to everyone
Is, Emigrate to Oregon,
The hot winds do not there prevail,
Your crops are not beat down by
hall,
And lightning does not flash around
In the state of Oregon.
Now after my advice to you,
I'll bid Nebraska state adieu;
So hand me down my good old gun;
For I am bound for Oregon.
