sV i 1TB J 4 The Mighty Influence Of Religion. By Cardinal JAMES GIBBONS. Jt M Jt Copyright by Waldoo Pawoett, ttELICION TEACHES ME THAT WE ARE ALL CHILDREN OF THE SAME FATHER. BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF THE SAME REDEEMER AND CONSEQUENTLY EMBERS OF THE SAME FAMILY. IT TEACHES ME THE BROTHERHOOD OF HUMANITY. Eelitrion. therefore, i ht mSTTTJTVa mTTT. EE OF CHARITY, and charity is the guardian of civCty and good breeding, and good breeding is one of the essential elements of the well being of society. Worldly politeness devoid of religion is cold, formal and heartless. It soon degenerates into hollow ceremony. Good breeding, inspired by religion and charity, inculcates a constant SELF DENIAL. It is SINCERE AND UNAFFECTED, it has the ring of the genuine coin, it passes current everywhere, and it is easily distinguished from the counterfeit The CHRISTIAN RELIGION IS ALL PERVADING. It influences the master and the servant, the rich and the poor. It AD MONISHES THE MASTER TO BE KIND and humane toward bis servant by reminding him that he also has a master in heaven who has no respect to persons. It ADMONISHES THE SERVANT TO BE DOCILE AND OBEDIENT to his master, "not serving to the eye as it were pleasing men, but, as the eervant of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart" It charges the rich not to be high minded NOR TO TRUST IN UNCERTAIN RICHES, but in the living God, who "giveth ns abundantly all things to enjoy." It counsels the poor to BEAR THEIR PRIVATIONS WITH RESIGNATION by setting before them the life of him who, in the words of the apostle, "being rich, be came poor for your sake, that, through his poverty, you might be rich." n n IN A WORD, RELIGION IS ANTERIOR TO SOCIETY AND MORE ENDURING THAN GOVERNMENTS. IT IS THE FOCUS OF ALL SO CIAL VIRTUES, THE BASIS OF PUBLIC MORALS, THE MOST POW ERFUL INSTRUMENT IN THE HANDS OF LEGISLATORS- IT IS 8TRONGER THAN SELF INTEREST, MORE AWE INSPIRING THAN CIVIL THREATS, MORE UNIVERSAL THAN HONOR, MORE ACTIVE THAN LOVE OF COUNTRY. Modern Conditions Endanger Nation's Eyesight. By Professor WILLIAM T. SEDGWICK of Masaachuero Institute of Technology. INTERMITTENT ELECTRIC LIGHTS, BIG ELECTRIC DISPLAY SIGNS, STRONG ELECTRIC READING LIGHTS, MOVING PIC TURES, THE -DAY-NIGHT" OF THE BIG CITIES, THE 8TRAIN OF "NEAR" WORK, THE RAPIDITY OF BUSINESS ALL THESE MODERN CONDITIONS ARE CONDUCIVE TO GEN ERAL WEAKNESS OF THE EYES. We are all suffering from Americanitis that "ALMOST DIS EASE" which is the bane of this country. Everybody who lives here long enough gets it It stands for a lot that i3 not very desirable, and the long standing" sufferer from Americanitis has to pay for his game. Years of rushing, close application to work, overexertion, TRYING TO CROWD WEEKS INTO DAYS, burning both ends at once, striving to do two things at the same time, laboring not only to get money, but also to spend it, attempting to be socially a3 successful as financially, FOR GETTING ALL ABOUT LEISURE, trying to make up by two weeks' vacation the waste of a year all these things tend to WEAKEN THE SYSTEM. THE EYES ARE DELICATE ORGANS. THEY CAN STAND SO MUCH AND NO MORE. AND IF THE 8TRAIN ON THEM IS TOO GREAT THEY MUST GIVE WAY. THAT 13 THE REASON WHY WEAK EYES ARE SO VERY COMMON. Oil 44 Get Ready For the By JOHN BARRETT, Director of the International Bureau of American Republic. 4iit44 HE Panama canal will be complete in five years, and , I yet the United States is DOING LITTLE TO GET rA :j READY FOR IT. I; THE GREAT INDUSTRIAL INTEREST8 8HOULD BEGIN TO 8TUDY INTIMATELY THE FIELD OF TRADE LYING BEYOND THE CANAL, AND THE NATIONAL AND 8TATE GOVERNMENTS SHOULD BE SYSTEMAT ICALLY IMPROVING OUR RIVERS AND HARBORS SO THAT THE WATER A8 WELL A8 LAND TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES OF THE UNITED 8TATE8 WILL ENABLE IT TO COMPETE 8UCCE88FULLY WITH OTHER NATIONS USING THE CANAL. l t Directly south from the canal is a coast line of five thousand miles, reaching from Panama to Patagonia, upon which practically debouch Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile, all countries of vast potentialities and conducting now in their isolated location an annual foreign commerce valued at three hundred million dollars. The canal, opened, will MAKE THIS GROW IN TEN YEARS TO ONE BILLION DOLLARS, OR TWICE THE COST OF THE CANAL. Northwest from the canal, or from Pan ama to San Diego, is another coast line of three thousand miles upon which debouch the five Central American republics and Mexico and a foreign trade worth now one hundred million dollars. There are, then, in short, eight thousand miles of resourceful coast line now doing against heavy odds a foreign trade of four hundred million dol lars and representing twelve different countries which WELL SUD DENLY BE PLACED INTO CLOSE PROXIMITY WITH THE UNITED STATES WHEN THE CANAL IS COMPLETED, only five years from now. Certainly the United States must begin to "GET READY FOR THE PANAMA CANAL."
