Portland, Oregon, in to be
plarod on an equal rate for grain
with Seattle, so we are told.
The Hill lines are going to haul
grain to Portland; and then 200
miles over hills and hollows to
Seattle for nothing. Most of it
will stick in Portland, we may
be sure ot that.
Alfalfa stacks loom up in every
direction, and more to come.
Kcho alfalfa meal is said when
subject to a particular refining
process to make good biscuits.

Kcclamation Service must limp
along with $11,000,000 while
money is rifled out of the pock
ets of the people for any old
trust by the hundreds of millions.
The people of the West should
demand nothing short of $100,
000,000 to be kept in a revolving
fund for the reclamation of arid
and swamp lands. The price of
a hulk of old scrap iron for
that is all a Dreadnaught will
be in ten years is more than
the Reclamation Service is given
for the whole United States. A
hundred acres of reclaimed arid
lands is worth more to the Unit

warships. Toriedoes are inak- j
ing warships a back number,
anyway.

some litigation over roads and
normals gives voice through the
press for a new State to be com-!

to work an injustice upon any
section of the State Anyway,
such a division would have to
receive the consent of both Leg
islatures and Congress. While
such impractical vagaries are
being discussed real issues are
sidetracked. '
Too many Eastern Oregon
farmers spread over sections
when they would make more and
live longer with ten-acre plots.
If some one would construct a
reliable table showing how to
compute the actual amount of
railroad constructed to the miles
built on paper it would be a very
useful service to mankind in
general and Oregon people in
particular.
Spain having once more killed
off a few thousand of her bravest

ward course. If the African
Moors were to conquer the
country they might be as good
masters to the common people
as the present bunch of aristo

Alfalfa fields green and sassy
for miles on miles; and yet there
are those who will say there is
"nothing down around Echo."
It is strange how Central Ore
gon is wanted by v railroad men
all of a sudden. Just as soon as
one line starts up business an
other butts in. Yet, only a very
few months ago we were assured
by the greatest railroad grabber
of modern times that it would
not pay for the ties to build a
railroad anywhere east of the
Cascades. Kcho would like to
be courted by two or three rail
road kings. She has a rattling
good transcontinental road now;
but it is hard to get too much of
a good thing.

Nobody would suspect Aldrich
of the Standard Oil State to be
a joker, but 't is slid his cele
brated tariff bill is so full of
jokes that they will not all be
marked and identified for fully
ten years. The jokes would
make a Trust roar with laugh
ter, for everyone is such a nice
little joke on the consumer the
people.
If there are any electric lines
coming this way in the offing
Kcho proposes to harpoon them.
