continuous dry subsurcace and un
less that Is maintained the paving
will not stand. On the upper side
of the street a drain ditch not less
than fourteen Inches deep and wide
enough to carrjr-the water at flood
season should be immediately con
structed and maintained , to Insure
proper life of the improvement. Un
less that Is at once accomplished the
work will be left half done and quick
deterioration will render the paving
worth not half its cost. We are not
familiar with the plans of the city in
the matter, but assume of course
that the proper drainage will be In
stalled. We simply call attention to
the necessity. If It is not done the
paving will go to- pieces. Such Im
provement should bo well done and
not left half finished.
SHOULD PROTECT
THE EVERGREENS
Complaints are being made by resi
dents of the outlying districts that
their choice exorgreen trees are being
cut ruthlessly for Christmas trees.
Particularly is this true about the
homes on the hill streets where ever
greens have been left standing alone
or In groups for artistic purposes.
These, they claim,' have been taken
in such quantities that soon the hill
sides will be denuded ct their charm,
and one of the leading attractions
that go to make Ashland the City
Beautiful will be gone forever.
There are plenty of small ever
greens in the woods, it Is said, that
make handsome Christmas trees, and
there is no restrictions laid on these
being cut In limited quantities. To
be sure, there are not of as easy
access as those iu the open sections.
but iu many cases it would be doing
a favor to the owners of woodlots if
these trees were gleaned out, care
being taken to cut them out of
clumps growing thickly together. The
trees thus left will have a better op
portunity to grow into hanrinome
timber aud will be much better for
the thinning process.
Attention is also being called to
the way in which Oregon grape is
being stripped from the woodlands
Instead of cutting the branches from
the stalk, many people pull It out by
the roots, regardless of how It h
destroyed, and in sonio sections this
handsome native shrub is being
externated. Already, It is claim
ed, one his to go fur back
in the mountains to get any
Oregon grape, on account of
the ruthlessness with whith It Is
being gathered. This is a particu
larly charming household decoration
for Christmas time, and should bo
carefully protected so It may alwuys
be arallablo for the Yuletide.
