I hare
been asked to Join two or threo
societies at school but declined.
My reasons for doing so were,
he lost of time I could apply to
study or being at home, and the
expense.
The la tte r Is not so
great, but erery little counts.
Now the question Is: am I go

E xpert Says N icotine Harms
Girls More Than
Men
PU L L M A N , Wash., Dec. 8.—
(U>)— Smoke and grow old; don’t
smoke and stay youthful.
Such was the advice Dr. N. O.
Covington, associate professor of
physiology at Washington State
college, gare women students at
the University here recently.
“ Nicotine harms girls
more
than men,” said Dr. Covington,
“because the nervous system of
the former sex Is more delicate.
Smoking affects the nervous end
ings in our entire system and acts
with paralysing effect upon the
emotions for a short. time. Conse
quently, it makes a woman look
old before her tim e.’’
Dr. Covington explained
that
although smoking soothes t h e
nerves and gives a feeling of reet-
fulness, the nicotine often para
lysis the nerves of the stomach,
causing indigestion aq,d tempor
arily dulling the brain.
Many plans for the holiday va
cations are being made.
Students at the Southern Ore»
gon Normal are also planning for
the holiday vacation, which Is to
extend over the same period, thé
m ajority cf the out-of-town stu
dents, planning to spend th«
holiday season at their ho^LOe.
