Chinese Situation—Impact
of Western and Kastern
Civilisation is Responsible
for Present Revolution
Says T. Worker.
:• The Southern or Revolutionary
forces of China are divided Into
two groups, the ultra-Red and
the pure Nationalist— the latter
fighting for three distinct ideals,
to give the people a voice in the
government, to change the econ
omic -condltiens, of the land and
establish a national conscious-,
gess, according to T-awrence Tod
nem, Chinese T. M. C. A. work
er, and an authority on the po
litical situation In * the country,
whp visited in Ashland today.
Mr. Todnem, accompanied by
hla wife and tWo children is en
route to McMinnville from Berke
ley, California, in McMinnville,
they will spend the holiday with
the parents of Mrs. Todnem.
To watch the revolution of
thought, rather than the revolu
tion of arms In Chinn, should
be the aim of the weetern world
— for years the revolution of
arms has been in progress, doing
little tangible good, but keeping
the ideals of a changing civili
sation constantly before tSh
minds of the people of the conn-
try, according to Mr. Todnem.
Twelve years service as general
Y. aecsetary la Tainanfu. capitol
of the Shantang province, have
given Mr. Todnem a keen un
derstanding of the problems of
the Chinese people. He gained the
confidence of the Chinese, end
served as general secretary of
the Antl-opinm society, assisting
parting of the deadly drag lato
their country. Ha also served
an soeretary of the famine re
lief work.
’ Thè Shantung, province Is tha
center of 'Chinese esitare, and
the Holy Land of the followers
of Confuaeiona, who lived in ta li
province, and whoa* remains lie
hurled there Sri the present Urna.
The Chinese of Tainanfu have a
deep respect for literature, tor
Confasctous was a great scholar
and writer, according ,to Mr.
Todnem.
The trend of the younger
Chinese toward higher education
has been a great movement, and
in this movement lien the hope
of China— for la education lira
the revolution of thought.
Mr Todnem plane to return
to China next summer to resume
his work there.
Forty attended a luncheon nt
noon at the Lithia Springs Hotel,
at which Mr. Todnem gave a
splendid talk on the Chinese sit
uation.
