Vfce possibility of infantile paralysis beinff a milk
The patient should be Isolated a» completely ns pos
sible In a clean, bare room, well screened to keep oat
insects. Visiting should not be permit »3d, and only
the necessary attendant should come in contact with
the case. All discharges, Including sputum, nasal
secretions, urine and feces, should be thoroughly dis
infected.
Eating utensils should he boiled. Everything that
comes In contact with the patient 'should be »tor-
lilted. Towels, bed linen ahd other fabric« should
be boHed or dipped in a strong germicidal solution.
The period at which isolation should be maintained
cap not be guessed at. Children are hot permitted to
return to school for three weeks. In the presence of
ah epidemic, street and house dost should be kept
down by sprinkling, oiling, pr other means employed
for this purpose. Dust should be'allayed whether

Nowhere in ally scientific report has feydrs ortother maladies been
traced to pasteurised milk as the carrier of th e fatal germ. Pas
“Seventy-two cases of epidemic InfantUe paraly
sis have been reported to the Oregon State board of
health. There is no desire to cause unnecessary
alarm, but the fact remains that there to am unusual
number of cades of infantUe paralysis in this state.
Reports from other states indicate an increase in the
number of cases of infantile paralysis reported as
well gs in Oregon.
Every available precaution
against its spread should be taken. Children should
not be permitted to come in contact with sick per
sons whether it be adults or children who are 111.
teurisation to a health insurance.
Dr. Strickler’s statement em-
phaslies this fact. He advises the use of pasteurised milk. Heed
his warning!
"It may be well to bear in mind that infantUe
phralysis is a disease of Childhood. About, 65 per
cent of the caee3 occur when under 6 years of age,
and about 30 per cent between the ages ot 6 and
10. Most ot the remaining 5 per cent of the oases are
In persons under 20. Thue it appears fhat very
young children are most likely to have this disease.
One general measure of protection would be to keep
young children away from other people. Including
relatives, as much as possible. The more peraone
a child comes in contact with, ther more o pp o rtu n -
ltles it would have of becoming infeoteu in ease such
persons were carriers. ,

"All known cases should be isolated and placed
under quarantine during the acute stage, and chil
dren in contact with such eases should also be iso
lated during the. period of incubation. There Is no
routine test by which carriers can b e. detected and
cases are not often recognised until paralysis. In
any case of acute illness where pocas*s are abortive
in type, and do hot develop paralysis. In any caae of
acute illness where poliomyelitis to suspected the
