B E R L IN , — OP)— The shortest
skirts Ih the civilised world are
in Berlin. And, we m ight add,
the longest legs in the world are
in the German capital.
Imagine, if you w ill, skirts as
short as bathing dresses, on
frau1ein< of ample proportions,
swaying to the steps of the Char
leston In smart tea gardens. The
effect is astounding, for, believe
it or not. these franleins certainly
have some understanding.
U ntil we arrived in BerUjy-’we
considered the knee-cap the lim
it where aklrt-lengths were con
cerned. W e were foolish enough
to believe that the skirt race waq
between American flappers and
girls of the French demimonde.
In Paris we decided th a t the
Americans had won the race by
two inches. Bat a Berlin girl on
Broadway wduldx certainly knock
the sails out of the wise-crackers!
In Berlin, they don’t ro ll ’em,
my dears! Instead, stockings are
as long as, a trapese
artist’s
tights. One gets the Impression
of staunch bodies w ith wide hips,
wide shoulders and correspond
ingly wide lugs set on badly shap
ed long-toed shoes. Just*now the
Charleston and the South Ameri
can Tange are considered a little
swankier In Berlin than one-steps,
waltxes and the like. And, until
you’ve seen a short-skirted frsu -
lein w aft her knees through the
lanquid steps of the Tango with
her face set on getting somewhere
— you’ve not Been anything.
Qn so-called sm artly dressed^
girls la Barlin, 1 cannot recall
a skirt which even touched the
knee-cap. Some were to ll four
inches above the knees for w alk
ing purposes Yon can Imagine
what thia length dwindled to for
dancing or sitting purposes..
W ell, whatever the German
maids sqt ont to do they usually
accomplish. The w ar of skirt-
lengths has been won- And Ber
