National Father and Son Week always turns
one’s thoughts to ponder on just what the relation­
ship of the average father is with his son. A big-
hearted Irish potyoemaa in New York once .said,
“ I have never known a boy to go wrong, never,
when his father spent an hour with him every night
after supp«»,*’ The testimony of ttys big-hearted
p olicem an together with that of Juvenile officers
and others seems to bear opt the facte that there
is too little understanding and friendly relationship
between toe “ modem” father and his so-called
“ modejn” sqn. If men knew as little toboqt their
business» and the average farmer about farming,
and mechanics about machinery, and doctors about
medicine, and preachers about the Bible, and the
banker about finance, or any man about his par-

his boy, what a terrible fax and ineffective world
this would be! In fact it would go to smash in about
six weeks. This is no exaggeration. Most every
father will tell you that Ke knows more about any
one of his other* interests than he does about his
own son.
Of course there are exceptions, we are not talk­
ing about those. The trouble is, the-average father
is too busy trying to make a living, or has so
many other activities that he just tales q chance

and trusts
to these agencies and th e 'sdUdn- tq bring hia boy
through unscathed, but too late cttwoveries that
not one of these agencies can take the place of a
real Dad for a pal.
It has been well said that, “ being a real dad
to a real boy is about all the real success there is
in this world anyway-mt least for fathers.” Fail-
wee at this point means failure all along the line.
“ Every time a boy goes bad a good man dies,” is
a truth overlooked by mqgy a father, but neverthe­
less it is worth pondering oter. I have fotmd that
the average boy does not demand the unreasonable
of his dad, just time enough that they might get
together on some common ground that there might
be a few things in common and that there might be
that companionship and understanding which will
send the boy to his dad at all trying times, and
when real advice and help are needed.
I recall one boy who came to me with a weighty
personal problem, who upon being asked why he
did not go to Dad, said, “ Why dad would chase
me out of the house if I ewe* «cat to him with a
question like th a t” Which upon investigation prov­
ed to be the truth, yet his boy was on the verge of .
ruin, and would not go, tp his father*
It has been found that the average hoy has
three thousand hours of time a year outside his
regular routine of sleeping and eating and going
to school. What does he do with all that tiffiuT
Do you, his dad know! Find out, and then cap­
italise it with worth-while activities, taking a hand
personally now and then, and you’ll save the boy,
and yourself, and society. And you’ll knew that
you’ve been a real Dad to your son-—and thatS
life!

costumes at the present {ime. The slate will soon
be wiped clean and she will be ready to attire her­
self anew next spring.
