PREVENTION . OF FIRE IS NOW NEEDED Observance of Fire Freven tion Week is Being Made Observance of Fire Prevention Week is being made generally in all sections of the United States — special proclamations issued by governors-wepeelal,observance be ing made .by service clubs and by schools— a concerted effort to bring, about a deeper realization of the importance of fire pre vention — the task of stopping flr^s before they start. October 9 was the anniversary of the grept Chicago fire which occurred in 1871 and brought great disaster— loss of life and homes and other prized posses sions to thousands of persons. In schools all over the country need of fire prevention, rather than fire fighting is being taught — a campaign of education which • brings to children the lesson of the great value of preventing fires. , Special speakers and teachers concentrate in driving home early the lesson of the great ' ( dangers and great and irreparable losses whloh fire brings. Fire Prevention is a topic in which everyone is equally inter ested— for fire is no respecter of property or persons. During 1 »*8 s o m e 10,000 persons lost their lives in fires and double that number were in jured. Prominent among the many reasons for preventing fires is thq necessity of conserving our na tural resources. The cost of building material — especially that of lumber— is constantly ad vancing. One important reason for this ie that enormous num- , bers of standing trees are destroy ed by fire «very year. Nature cannot produce trees suitable for building material so fast as fire can burn them. Burning is the matter of minutes, or hours, while building is the matter of years. Introduction of efficient fire departments, elaborate water sys tems and various other means for extinguishing fire have b e e n made. Now the campaign is di rected toward methods of reduc ing our fires. It would seem that more at tention has been paid to provide effective means of extinguishing' fires rathef than paying attention to the prevention of them. To reduce fire losses— to pro tect, loved ones, homes, business and public, carlessness mast be avoided. ‘ One reason for observing Fire Prevention week* is to create a spirit of competition between communities in fire prevention work. Ashland Is particularly proud of the small losses which have re sulted from fires in thia city In the last year and- the constant Inspection of fire '’hazards— va cant lots in the summer t i m e which become fire traps and de fective flues in the winter by Fire Chief Clint Baughman— has aid ed materially in reducing fire losses. ■ «• , Efficient equipment is neces sary for fire fighting but a com prehensive and constructive edu cation on fire prevention 1« a fundamental need also.
