PACKS BACK ASHLAND 20 Years Aga October T, 1W7 GOD'S MANJPQLD W 0 R K 8 :— Q Lor<, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom ba* thoa made ttp m all: the earth la fa ll of thy richas- Paalm 104:<4. PRAYER: Lord God, all w a it‘ upon Thee, for Thou doest give them their food in due Providing Good Books For Children / The .efforts of school -¿eRchers and school librar ies to raise the plane of boys’ and girls’ reading and to open to them “ the rich treasures that lie in books” is set forth in the study of backgrounds which has just been prepared for the National Committee for the Study of Juvenile Beading. While the purpose of the study is to point to the necessity for more reading and better directed reading on the part of young girls, it nevertheless acknowledges with praise the Work of agencies which are trying to bring character-forming literature to the atten tion and liking of youthful readers. In the study which the committee has made its was found that 3 per cent of 253 junior and senior high schools are patting forth definite efforts to make good books available to the girls of their schools and to encourage the reading of thebe boqks. , Especially interesting is 'the experiment of the Milwaukee Vocational School, a continuation school for boys and girls, which has made of its classrooms substations of the school library, teachers and librar ians uniting in the attempt to interest the pupils, and certificates and diplomas of credits being award ed for the completion ot a certain amount of read ing. A* a resqlt students who never before drew books have become regular readers, biographies, classics and histories are receiving more attention, fewer of the so-called lurid magazines are being brought into the schoolrooms, and there has been a better display of English and manners on the part of the students. * While some rural schools, especially those with state aid, are providing adequate libraries, défic iences were found in others, three out of ten coun ties in one state reporting some schools that had no libraries at all, while ont of 39 one-room schools in another state nine had no library books at all, the average number" of books per pupil was four, and almost one-fifth of the books in these school librar ies “ were reported a s unsuitable for use in any grade.” I The great majority of the schools reported ex cellent methods of interesting children in good literature, such as talks and a'dvice by teachers, literary and reading clubs, discussions, reports ana required' book reviews, extra credit for outside reading, lectures, reading out load in the classroom, book exhibits, permission to read in study hours, summer reading lists, and acting dramatic scenes from books.—Christian Science Monitor. ------ ”T Observe The Quarantine It has been necessary' for the city to put on three extra men, janitors in the various schools, to act as quarantine officers because all residents Of the city have not been observing, strictly, the ordinance recently passed by the city council in an effort to prevent infantile paralysis from getting a start in the city. If a person doesn’t believe in the quarantine, that is no reason that the children of other persons, who do believe in the quarantine, should he en dangered. Some parents knowingly have allowed their children to visit other homes and play with the children there. The children can not understand the terrible consequences of the disease and therefore are un able to see why they should be the objects of the Quarantine. The parents certainly must know the results of the infantile paralysis and if they fail to lake such measures as may protect their children they certainly are remiss in their duty. Time for drastic action is here. The police are determined that the provisions of the ordinance shall be observed fully and they will be neglecting, their duty if offenders are not brought into court There has been plenty of warning. Those who do not take full cognizance of it should be penalized. Parents should remember that they must think of the children of other parents as well as their own. The time for the quarantine was first establish- ’ed as two weeks. Unless there is fall oooperstioa the time will be indefinite—Grants Pass Courier. “ Clean Your Chimney and A^oid a ötaek ni Trouble.”—Fire Prevention week, October 0 to 1ft.
