Blue Rose
It was announced recently in one of the London
papers that a horticulturist at last had succeeded in
producing what has been the quest of rose growers
for centuries—a really blue rose. Not a defep crimson
shading almost into black. Not a purple. But a
really brilliant blue rose.
♦ - .,1
The ordinary matter-of-fact fellow will per
haps bluntly ask:
\
“ And why bother about a blue rose? Red
roses are good enough. And there are plenty of
flowers that are blue.’’
But the deep truth is that all life is worth liv
ing in the quest of the blue rose. The blue rose is
the ideal. It is the lure that leads man oil . to* great
adventure, to inventions, to discoveries.
When Columbus crossed the Atlantic iff search
of another continent, it was a quest for a blue
rose. When men penetrated frozen wilds to attain
the north pole, it was a quest for the blue rose.
When Lindbergh crossed the ocean in hid tiny
plane he, too, was seeking the bine rose. Eipstfin
in his study formulating his theory ..of relativity;:
Edison in his laboratory making new things fo r
man’s use and enjoyment; all the great poets and
novelists and dramatists and painters and sculp
tors—all are in qfiest o f the blue rose.

To the Editor.
I ootiee there io at least one paper in Jackson
county which will give a faij deal to both side« of a
caae soch as the Zimmerlee incident.
And I for one want to let y«R know it ia appre
ciated by the law abiding citizens of Southern Ore
gon.
I, as well as others, have noticed how unfair the
Medford papers have been in this case; they only
point t|»e news which seems to suit their fancy, and
care nothing about giving the officers, to whom we
look for protection, a square deal.
Therefore I want yoa to accept my thanks, and
beat wishes for, suoeem in publishing not only an
up-to-date, bat a square-shooting paper.
Yours very truly,

Fire Prevention Week
Fire Prevention Week is to be held this year
from October 9 to 16. Throughout the country var
ious organizations will again attempt to train the
public in offsetting the greatest menace in the
United States today. Our people will do well to
learn, and profit by example.
The tragedy of fire is that it is almost entirely
preventable. There are, of ooorse, natural causes for
conflagration that cannot be helped, but these arc a
very small pereeatage of the total. The greaUsbt
damage is caused by carelessness and ignoranoe. Bil
lions of dollars are wasted and destroyed each year
by a few people’s carelessness. It would not lie so
reprehensible if the loss were borne by them alone.
Bat it most be shared, directly or indirectly, by
every citizen and taxpayer.
It is the duty of every eitizen to cooperate in the
observation of Fire Prevention Week. And it should
be his pleasure.
