An Open Letter to the Editor From the President o f General Motors J L /A S T S P R IN G I wrote you th a t m y beMef in the country newspaper had led t a i n Genkral M otors to decide to advertise o u f products together in the sm all-d ty press o f the country. T h e returns from the series of the mass agri recently published have justified th a t faith; and we shall continuS to advetoha in yflur I t occurs to m e , however, th a t some o f yofir renders m ay be asking: •’W h a t i t General M otors?" and “ W h y is General M otors?* Three a te fa ir questions and I ahsuld fihe fas answer th em as fran kly as I can. General M o to rs was organised some years ago on the theory th a t a group o f large com panies, wor U n g together, could render a better service th an th ey could separately. In this we simply applied to industry a principle th a t is as old ns civilization as ngsrdt tne b o u r n fam ily and hum an progress. Original members Of th a General Motors fam ily were Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oak land and Oldsmobile, together w ith the Delco- L ig h t Com pany and other well-known com panies m anufacturing automotive equipment. B y joining together th eir resources, we were able t o establish great Research Laboratories, a 1245-acre Proving Ground and th o -G M A C Plan o f credit purchase; to effect vast econ omies in purchase and m an u ltatu ra and distribution; to assure an dynatetainthequriity of every product in the O^neral M otors fam ily. H as th e General M otors fam ily Iwiaciple proved itself in practice? T h e best answer, I th in k, is to compare the Chevrolet, B uick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile arid Oakland o f today w ith tha models o f five or ten years ago. Then add Pontiac, a General M otors crea tion. A dd LaSalle, another General M otors creation. A nd then consider how General M otors has developed these cars in to a com plete line, w ith in which an y frsnfly taffy find a suitable q u ality car a t th e price i t plans to pay: “ A C ar for E very Purse and Purpose." Another example Is Frigidaire, th e dectric refrigerator. General M otors had the resources to spend Millions t o develop a satisfactory refrigerator, and theffi lo apply to ite m anu facture the asms processes s M c h have in* creased the u tility and lowered the coat o f tha automobile. W s believe th a t thia record Justifies General Motors as am economic institution. Its prod ucts are quality products, first o f all. T h eir prices represent the economies o f united effort peesed on to t t a purchaser. In the last year one in each three automobiles dumen b y the public ta s been a General M otors car. T h e service o f Delco-Light electric plants has extended to more than a quarter million homes, while Frigidaire has become the world’s largest sell ing convenience o f its land. W e believe also th a t the values now offered in the current General M otors products (which are listed below) prove anew th at “ m any minds are better than one" and th a t a fam ily o f cbmpanies, working together, can produce results which are decidedly in the public interest and o f increasing benefit to the individual fam ily. > » B u ild in g DR. 1RNB8T A.
