The element of obaace is one which has always
attracted the venturesome.
Homan life baa meant little.
Roman gladiators pitted their strength against
the strength of wild beasts in the arena. I* was
all to no avail.
The Spanish bullfighter has pitted his strength
against the strength of the maddened bull. Many

more ndany brothers. •,
Man has turned his attention from chance be

_ There was tragedy before the great Dole flight
started: Lives were lost. There was disappoint-,
ment for those who were unable to get away on
the great race. But the daring souls who were to
blase the path of progress—were undaunted by death
disappointment. They soared away through the

The Playground
; ground for the , season. .,
.
On*< of the finest community enterprises thifi
season ^ g be^h the operation of the playground
in the city parir.
1
• There is no harder season on parents and chil
dren than the summer time. It is difficult to occupy
their time, and such idleness breeds mischief, dis
content aad frequently trouble. Playground play
under supervision solves the problem of both par
ents and children.
In all sections of the United States the value
of. playgrounds has been recognised and public
spirited citizens everywhere have backed any move
ment to provide wholesome diversion for children.
Aimless loafing and running wild about the
streets is worse than a waste of time—and supervis
ed play, learning the way to live together, is of
far more value to the boy and girl thfln merely
“ play.”
Airless loafing does much to undo all of the
good which nine months of school, work has done
for the boy and girl. Supervised play keeps boys*
and girls “ in trim” for a return to school and de
velops in their understanding a recognition of the
rights of others.

Photoradiograms
Wednesday afternoon, about 3 o ’clock Coast
time, Art Goebel and his flying champion landed
in Honofcahi as victora in the Dole air race.
.
Leis m profusion were flung around the necke
of the eoeqnerore of the Pacific Coaat-Honoluln
route; pictures were taken of the two men thus
bedecked. Photoradiograms depecthig this sceue
were sent to Han Francisco, a matrix—material
from which an electrotype is made—was manufact
ured at the NEA Service plant; this matrix was
rushed to The Daily Tidings, and just 48 hoars
after the leis were placed on the necks of the
aviators far off in Honolulu The Daily Tidings re
produced the illustration in Friday’s issue.
Thia is jost one of the many marvels which the
present age has develo|ted, and Thé Daily Tidings
is glad to give its readers this service, thus enabling
them to bob thio illustration before it was pnb-
liabod in any other ncwn;»a|>er in this region.
