Blase Started,to Bum Grass
Damages Fence Around
Course
Volunteers and* city firemen
fought a blase on the city golf
course for two honra Thursday
night in an effort to extinguish
the fire which was started in the
late afternoon to burn tall, dea*d
grass along the fairways.
Members of the club took gun­
ny sacks along in the early eve­
ning and kept the .blaze within
bounds as the grass was burned
awhy and tha appearance of the
bourse was bettered. It w ar near
11 o'clock, according to Fire Chief
Clint Baughman whan word was
received that the fire had spread
after members left the course and
was burping away the fence abont
the course. Considerable fence
was burned away, before the fira
was brought under control by the
men who" worked until after mid­
night before they sneoeeded In en­
tirely extinguishing the blaze.

Attempted Record Breaking Flight to Honolulu.
SAN FRANCISCO, July 15—-<LP>—The Pacific today
seemed to have scorned the challenge of the two daring
airmen who Thursday morning with greatest confidence,
left the airfield at Oakland, and had drawn them info its
vastness. *

At an hour today when, they would have received the
world’s praise, had their efforts been successful, Ernest
Smith and Emory Bronte were on a shark infested sea,
cut off from all communication with radio stations ,w hich
had received the story of their flight from out the Golden
