CHICAGO, Ji^y ».—<LP)— With
the closing of every gasoline sta
tion in the Chicago era, Chicago
and its suburbs face their most
serions transportation situation
since the automobile became part
of business and pleasure.
There are more than half a
million automobiles in this area
whose population approximates
5,000,000, yet not a single drop
of gasoline could he purchased
within 20 miles of the Loop Fri
day night.
The cause .for the closing of
every filling station lies in dif
ferences between the oil com
panies, acting as a unit, and the
track driver and station attend
ants’ nnion.. Until Wednesday,
according to Patrick Burrell,
president of the unions, negotia
tions were in progress with the
companies for an increase in
wages for the workers; But ne
gotiations ended then, he said,
and the men of all companies
voted to go on a strike.
' ‘’We didn’t want to embarrass

— Aaron Sapiro's mlllton-dollar
libel suit against Henry Ford will
be settled out of court, according
to William H. Gallagher.
The terms of the settlement
will be announced within a week,
the Jewish farm cooperative or
ganizer's lawyer said today.
The suit will be settled because
of the billionaire's disavowal of
the anti-Jewtsh policy of his mag
azine, the Dearborn Independent.
Gallagher said Sapiro had sued
Ford for vindication. Instead of
money, and that Ford's repudia
tion of the Independent's attacks
on Sapiro practically had ended
the case.
