dub’s Anniversary
The first anniversary of the Ashland Golf Club
will be celebrated this afternoon and e v e n i n g
at the course near this city with playing by members
and their friends and a basket picnic afterwards.
‘ ..WhUe thfl.work on the course VW started a year
agp, the development of the large number of fair
anjafamrs who go to the course frequently dates back
only a few months or weeks in many cases.
This morning a man was heard to say: “ l am
not old enough to play golf?’ This is the attitude
of many people, who have a false idea of what golf
ia. They think it is an old man’s game; whereas to
' pitot and follow your ball around the nine holes is a
physica| feat which the^f do not w ant; to wait too
long to attempt. They Consider it a game similar
to Old Maid or something equally as unexciting and
requiring an equal amount of mental exercise; but
if these same men were to play the game, play it With
as much enthusiasm, skiff and effort as theym igbt
apply in any, other game they would find it produc
tive of both excitement and mental exercise.
A small numbferof loeal man and women have
entered into the sport with enthusiasm and in only
a short time several fair amateurs have developed.
■Within another year, it will have attracted and de
veloped » munh larger hsmher of enthusiasts. Many
are today staying away because of a false attitude,
but persons of any pride or sporting blood are never
wilKpg tp admit that the next man or wQjpan js bet
ter at May game, and if these doubters will te stth e
game» it would be safe to predict they would fo tm za
new opinion of tip* pastime.
There is something about Ashland, and the
beauties of Aahiand whifch makes folks talk right out
loud And become immediate boosters of the com
munity. Scarcely ever is there a visitor comes to the
city who does net comment on the beauties of the
place.
However, there are some home folks who have so <
grown up with these beauties that they fail to appre
ciate their real value.
w Visitors, however, are an asset to the commun
ity. Every visitor who hv^orp*** a boostpr of Ashland ;
and Ashland beauties, and Ashland resources, is just
so much of an advertisement for the town. We like
to have them talk and we are glad that our com-
mhnitv is the sort of a community that makes them
talk.

They want to come back they say, these visitors •
in our midsf, R®d it is qp to every home booster to
bring those visitors back again and again. We should
cultivate a friendly attitude toward them in order
that they may not be stfangersein our midst.

Wbite The Daily Tidings regrets that no Jack-
•on county fair will he held this.year, unless some
»expected development makes this posfihle, it is far
better to cancel the engagement this year than to
recklessly dive in and incur a deficiency of several
thousand dollars, which seemed a certainty under
present conditions.
However, the fair association should preserve the
grounds and buildings in good condition, and should
plan and devise methods if possible to insure the
resumption of the fair next year, for Jackson county
does not want to drop this beneficial attraction per
manently.
’
It would be splendid If the association could in
■oyoe y>y raise sufficient funds .to hold the regular
fair this fall, for this is undoubtedly of deep educa
tional and publicity value to our county.
