HEALDSBURG,
Commercial Aviatioh
Lindbergh’s first message to the American
J people when he returned from Prance was to pre-
' pare for the era of commercial aviation which is
„coming. Although the United States has made great
; strides in developing air mail European countries
J are far ahead in the development of commercial fly-
■in**
This is not surprising when we consider the dif-
; ference between the two countries. Europe is small
•_with a concentrated population while America, es-
pecudly in the west, has large territory to jcover and
* commercial traffic is not so heavy.
Safety is one of the most important factors in
; the development of commercial aviation and landing
; fields are one of the most important elements of
safety. An airplane survey of the Pacific coast for
- the purpose of laying out definite air lines for planes
* is now undèr way. Many of the cities between
i Seattle and San Diego have good landing fields.
’ Those who have* not should make every effort i v
* obtain at least the ground for a good field. To neg-
lect to do so will be to get a slow start in a new
commercial race which is starting.

L
Vacations
A m eminent physician says persons who fail to
take two weeks or a month’s vacation once a year
ai-c in danger of losing their vigor if not their health.
Probably two thirds of the vacation propaganda we
hear and read comes from persons who hope to get
a dig at our pocket books while we are away from
home and have loosened up on the purse strings for
a little onting. But Oregon still has attractions
enough which are free to satisfy the native lover.
No one caa pu t a feftee around the mountains
and charge admission. There are still too many
shade trees by the side of cool streams for any com-
inereiai enterprise to get a monopoly on them. It
is still possible to find a deserted place along the
beach where the oceAn call be enjoyed without the
interruption of jazz bands or pink lemonade.
But most people prefer to go back to nature only
by degrees.
A formal dinner-dance usually goes well with, an
onting into the woods. Meals served in a dining
room are preferable to those prepared over the camp
fire even for those roughing it at the beAch. Add
ing commercial enterprises to vacattions has not
ruined them but increased their popularity with
many people.
