That Astoria la waging a deter­
mined campaign to secure the
1928 state convention of Elk
lodges was indicated in communi­
cations received by the local lodge
today.
The Astoria Chamber of Com­
merce and various civic organiza­
tions there have co-operated in
preparing an elaborate tentative
program for the welooming and
entertainment of delegates, should
the annual gathering be held
there.
Astoria, the letters pointed out,
is the center pf all historical in­
terest of the Old Oregon Country
and within its area are relics that
recall vividly all the romance of
the early pioneer days. The gi­
gantic Astoria Column, recently
completed, has taken its place
among the great monuments of
the world, and the entire Oregon
history is pictured in base-relief
on its sides. The column, niount-
ed on the crest of a hill, towers
above the city, and overlooks the
