Fire Prevention
» A fireman’s primary duty is to prevent fires.
To know how to fight them is of course essential.
To know how to save.lives, to be willing to sacri
fice his own life to save others, if necessity demands
that supreme sacriflc. This is all an every day part
of a fireman’s existence. The state fire marshal
stressed these points yesterday.
Prevention, however, is the keynote of a fire
man’s duty. He stands ready to. fight fires, just
as a physician must stand ready to fight diseases,
but as a physician preaches the value of immuniz
ing as a preventative of disease, so must' a fireman
preach prevention of fires.
Co-operation of the publie in this work is es
sential. The fire chief does not ask you to clean up
a fire trap, just to exert his own authority. He asks
you io clean up those fire traps as a preventativo
against the monster which has caused such great
jiroperty losses in the past.
To recognize the value of fire prevention and
co-operation in preaching the essentials of this pre
vention, and in observing them, is the duty of every
citiaen.
Some of these things that give the big thrills
are not really as thrilling as they look.
One would suppose that a tranalantie flier would
get a quiver up and down liis bgck bone as he looked
down and saw himself flying over the ocean. As a
matter of fact he probably doesn’t quiver along the
spinal column any more than a farmer driving a
fence post and he probably doesn’t even look down
at the ocean he is conquering.
It is natural tu J o c k
at the other
man’s job. This is especially true when the other
fellow ’s job gets a lot of attention juuLyours doesn’t
get any,-

,
But the job of flying across the ocean really is
some filing of a monotonous one in which a lot of per
sons take part. First the airplane must be manu
factured and that means a lot of grinding, lifting
and other monotonous work in a shop. Ty fly across
the ocean a pilot must - be trained and that takes
months of practice doing over and over again the
things necessary to control a plane in flight. Air
currents and forces must be wudied and mastered
and that takes hours, and weeks and months of work
with instrumenta and mahtematics.
When it finally comes time to fly across tho
ocean the pilot probably gets about as much thrill
as a stage driver does when he starts out on his' run
for the 504W0tli timo. »A lot of people who are leav
ing tiresome jobs to become famous aviators will
never make the grade because they will find too
much that is tiresome before they ever get into the
Tule lake farmers who are having their grain
eaten by grasshoppers should send for the turkey
raisers to come to their rescue.
Los Angeles is reported to lie divided in a great

North Carolina has a law which gives preachers
right of way in traffic on the streets. But preachers
who show kpeed on tlfte concrete usually have stop
signs on their pulpits.
