Once more the flowers will be strewn across the graves. Once more Memorial Day comes, the inevitable day. The deep commanding thud of muffled drum beats, the drolling tones of funeral dirges will cause us to pause in life’s onward rush and think of the realities of the great Beyond. This one day—May 30—is uaconunanded by law, but dictated uy that which is greater—the heart aud conscience of man. » And the question comes, “ What shall we do with i t ! ” Memories of love, devotion, sacrifice, to country and to individual fills our hearts on this day. And it Is the unwritten stories of sacrifice, love and forbearance and sacrifice to which our attention is called on this day. The brotherhood of man is shown to be real In the contemplation that no matter how high men rise in the accepted scale of success, all must return to the mortal element from which they sprang. We then begin to understand that it is the souls that develops alike from the humble stations and from the high positions. So Memorial Day is the time when the precepts and examples of those who have lived and loved leave their mark upon our memories aud are so deeply engraved in the hearts of men. Whether or not the construction of the dam in Ashland canton will be started^aext year will be decided at the election Tuesday, May 31st. _______ The discussion has brought out a large amount of rather mystifying figures as to costs, gallonage and water consumption, predictions as to future weather conditions and other propaganda» -usually accompanying elections. These are important, hat the question seems to be one which The Daily Tidings feels the voters will satisfactorily settle., ' Practically everybody has been in favor of more water for the last several years. The city has for many years been figuring on the creation of an adgqapte water supply. Exhaustive surveys and searches for the best source were made. Based on the reports of engineers, city officials decided that the water program which was outlined last fall and approved by the voters would supply the need ed water to protect this city In its future needs. „The DaiT>’ Tidings does not feel the opposition to the program because of temporary conditions or temporary saving In water consumption justifies the defeat of the main part of this water program. We feel that the city should carry’ out its program and that, if we look forw ard with optimism, we can easily see a time within the near future when we will be mighty thankful that we have provided the larger water supply, even though it did cost ‘con siderable. Ashland today has several improvements which were opiwsed, but which those opposing in tho earlier days would n ot' dispose of today for many times the cost. Can You Swim? Hummer is approhehing: can yon svrrm! The cool plunges will lie tempting. Motorists will travel far from home. Trains will carry vacationists, seek ing the quiet waters. Mothers and fathers will bo anxious for the safety of their loved ones. Swimming is one of the best forms of.exerciae and is highly beneficial and pleasurable in many ways. There rig little excuse for any normal person not knowing how to take care of himself in water. Resolve now that you will not let the autumn sua go down upon your lack of knowing how to swiui. .
