fMífciq«' DAILY A S B I.A N I) D A IL Y T ID IN G S f lo w ,b HO sä The Meadow Lark Poets have sung rhapsodies to the mocking bird, the nightingale, the oriole, the linnet and many other charming songbirds that gladden the hours of spring and summer with their blithsome music. They are, indeed, winged messengers of joy, bring ing from the southland the radiance of the palm and magnolia to mingle with the oak and vineclad maple.. Uove and eestaey, regret and sorrow, are blended in rhythmic harmony, even as smiles with tears in the drama of lift. Pleasing and beautiful, however, migratory birds •are proud and vain.- Coy and reclusive,* th e y ‘seek their own society in the leafy bowers of flowery copse, the aristocrats and nabobs of« the feathered kingdom. As traveling troops of haughty tourists, they appear.without greetings and depart without adieu, leaving-only the memory of their entertain- m ediae a pleasant dream. The doqgenial touch of friendship, of neighborly love,, has never kindled the endearing charms that linger with the permanent abode. . * » \ ¡Who shall speak for the home bird, the fumble, universal bird, the bird of birds—the meadow lark? He builds his nest on the ground in a clump of grass and brood/ his yeung in sincere modesty. He feeds on bugs and seeds of. grass and woods, as humble in his food as in ms bed. He is an hopest bird* Unlike the linnet or the robin or a host of prouder birds, he pilfers neither fruit nor grain. He does no harm to man nor bird nos beast The jay may chide, the robin chirp and .ail the other feathered hosts may quarrel and fight, and yet the lark maintains the peace serene with sympathy for all his erring friends. Does goodness fill his life with joy and ehedr? He sings in sh in e or shower; in summer’s eun or winter’s storm he sounds goncoytiant note as it is iji praise fnr avnry good and perfect gift, Vibib. fleet of wing as ally songster of the gnnge, he doea^fcot migrate to warmer elim as,^ He likes his native health and friends and stays to cheer them through the winter months. With jaunty grace he perches on the fence or tree, the lilao-eolored heart gemmed on his yellow breast, his plumage rich, yet free from gandy hue,, h e , nod* and Jbobs his hehd gnd sings. H e is' God’s messenger to man ttrteach ns patience, peace*and joy. Who does not love the lash, er may demand that he’oppose that man's*, election or appointment to some public office, or favor some public improvement that will hurt that man’s business. When he does oppose that friend he sometimes makes a personal sacrifice on the aï* tar of publié service and-it oftentimes hurts him to do so more than, it hurts the friend opposed. The readers of a newspaper* seldom Recognize or appreci ate these sacrifices at the time they are made but. in the long run the pape^ builds up the kind of rep utation that the publisher of high ideals' wants it to attain, and its readers Team tt> trust its motives.
