Led From Cell
A t 6:30 thia morning, Hugh
D'Autremont, whom the state
maintains, with Roy and Ray D'
Autremont, his brothers, murder
ed Johnson, was led from hia cell
on the second floor of the Jack-
son connty Jail to the court room.
Incarceration has removed the
tan of army service in the Philip
pines from his face, which has as-
sumed a prison pallor.
During the examination of wit
nesses, he and his mother,. Mrs,
Belle D ’Autremont, who has coma
from Lakewood, N. M., to be with
her son, sat dose together back of
Fred E. Smith, David Evans, John
Collier and Gna Newbury, defense
attorneys.
A t times D ’Autremont watched
prospective Jurors, displaying • w
keen interest in their replies to
questions of the state and defense
lawyers. The rest of the time he
gazed at the backs of his at
torneys. He « id nothing to hia
mother, nor did he look around at
the crowd which Jammed the tiny
court room until hardly standing
room was left.
Cleon Shaven
D'Autremont was clean-shaven,
and wore the blue serge suit
which he bought In the Philip
pines shortly before his arrest.
The suit had been freshly pressed#
and Hugh was immaculate.. After
a short recess at 11 o’clock, he re-
turned to the courtroom with a
green raglan overcoat thrown
around his shoulders..
Metropolitan newspapers were
well represented at the opening of
the trial. Both the Portland New«
and Oregon Journal had reporters
at the press bench, while the As-
soclated Press. Which serves the
Oregonian and Telegram in Port-
land, was represented by a Med-
tayd newspaperman. The United
Press and their world-wide agency
was represented by the Portland
newspapermen. .
