That organisations carry on ideals and earn* out projects is not to be deplored, But that WC are thus losing our individuality is of serious conopm, Bat what is there to do about itf t h e instinoti« band men and women together has ever been pre- dominent. Even in ancient and medieval ages there were scholarships, societies, protective association« and various orders of knighthood. Government it self is the product of organization. It is true that if one wants to “ put over*’ some scheme, worthy or unworthy, he seeks organized funse to accomplish his purpose. It ha« also cóme to be true that.if a man plead« alone for an issue he is called a crank; but if he does it thru an or ganisation he is regarded as a booster. It is not -organisation that, does the damage; it is the merit and the need of the particular pro position that should give ObnOem, and be distin guished from the unworthy, Mte inopportune and the inconsistent. It is not that people are organized thatdoes harm. The real danger is that they might use the power of numbers for the accomplishment of unworthy projects or selfish purposes, These time« are different from those of Aris totle, and even from these of Shakespeare, Caflyle and Emerson who, unaided by “ organizations,” solely impressed their ideas upon the world to «neh extent that their works are part of the living literature of today. The plan pow found most efficient, indeed indispensable- for civic and national welfare is organisation. The social, religious, edur national, amusement, business and political worlds of today have found it so, As for moderns losing their individuality, or ganisation gives greeter opportunity for self-ex pression. So on with the organization« with their presidents and secretaries, their motions, commit tees, dues songs and prayers. No one could stop them if he tried. The great hope for the world is that they may continue to prove their existence worth while. ' - - Naval Limitations - To increase or not the strength of the Navy promises to be as hard A question to answer sat isfactory as the tariff ever was. The only point to decide is whether an increase in armaments tends to insure peace, or whether a limitation of armaments .renders war less probable. The whole peace and war question hinges on the proposition of whether armaments are not only protectors of defense fortifications, hut also des troyers of amicable international relations and treaty obligations. - No one has ever been able to answer these questions satisfactorily to a sufficient majority of the people or of nations to finally settle-the mat ter. Armaments may. he limited, or even reduceq; poison may he made less poison; and shell leaa brutal; but there will he armaments so long aa human passions take precedence over brotherly love. The Chinese situation shows that a part of the world is a long wgy reached the goal.
