MarahaH," the former vice-president told how two accountants were exam ining the books of a township trustee in Indiana. They found he had charged him self on the road fund ueoount, with “ Graft, $20?» , The trustee explained that he bought a road scraper, and finally the salesman handed him a $20 bill. He tried |o return i t ‘‘No, th at's yours,” said the. a g en t “ How ig that m ine?” ‘‘Why you blamed old fool," said the JtfW t “ th a t’B graft." I t never occurred to that honest trustee to tyke the money for himself, but he charged it to him self on the town books as graft. There are some pessim ists who think there is an enormous amount of corruption in public #ork- huf probably the people who work for the public are at least of average honesty. In their work in foreign lauds, som e o f the dark skinned youngsters would a t first get angry at something that happened en the ball ground, and p all out a fraifa and lay In w ait to stub tha fellow who offended them. But it w as impressed on them that that was contrary to the spirit o f the game, which demands fair play, gentlemanly conduct, and self control. Gradually these boys would acquire this point of view. ' ‘ ‘ Mi The ball grounds of our country epn he rngde A wonderful school for teaching American principles, pnd for smoothing out rough characters, if some one is in charge who w ill use them for this pur pose. A Contrast IV is often remarked here in Ashland that one gets vary pleasant greetings from the people of opr home «tores, even in places where one rarely or pever buys anything. The store folks seem to feel interested in aH our home people, even in cases where they never get a d elia r’s worth o f patronage put of them, beeanse they are all citizens of one community and have interests and experiences in common. But if you go ipto a »tore away from home, and decline to buy, the people of that store feel no per sonal interest in you. It seems like a good plan* for our people to buy their supplies of these home concerns where people feel a personal interest in them. In that w ay a feel ing of unity and reciprocity is built up, and people feel they are all working together for the general benefit. And when that feeling exists, the basis for advancment in prosperity and advantages is created. B e tte r Railroads The enormous sum o f more than $6,000,000,000 as been spent in the last eight years for new equip ment and additions to property on the railroads. The unproved earnings of the roads demonstrate that expenditure has paid. It is poor policy for people to keep on using poor tools. That principle applies to the farmer tyith his simple equipment and to a railroad with its vast capital. An adequate equipment should save enough expense to pay interest on its cost, and leave something over for the owners. Many men engaged in business in Ashland could serve the public better qnd increase their earnings, by improving their plant and equipment, even If they have to borrov money to do i t Women in Journalism The great puyority of «»liege girls crave to he todvertiaing Writers and newgpapcr rciiorter«, nc- oording to the director of a eollegiate oeeupatlonqt bureau, but ahe report« that comparatively few find th»t kind o f jobs.
