Dr. Harry Emerson Fdsdiek, ♦ famous preacher, warned hie congregation in New York ou a recent Sunday, that the present generation wor- aliips bigness too ranch, and it depends top much on external things. He thought that real civilization had not progressed very much since the time of Washington, and he remarked that many fathers buy the machinery of the home and oil it with money and expeot it to work, but it won’t, on that basis. Clarice, writing in the Century magazine. She names 'Anne Morgan, Alice,Roosevelt Longworth, and Ruth Hanna McCormick as women who have the tremendous power necessary to win high political honors. ’ s If a woman becomes’president, it will probably be as the climax of a long oareer in stich offices as state governor, cabinet secretary, representative or senator in congress. Most of the men who have as cended to the chief office Ijave -had to take suoh pre liminary steps. Tn become president, a man needs not merely high intellectual capacity, hat a long experience oi political management . The game of politics is to be learned' Jiy reading about it, but one actually has to play it for years to become skilful at it. «It seems not unlike ly that we shall have a woman president - some day, but it would appear probable that the time is a very considerable distance in the futBre. Jailing the Machine ej A justioe of the pqpoe in Berkley, California, has hit upon the idea of jailing the machine for automobile traffic violation«. This would seem like quite a clever way of handling people wh(^\-iolate .the automobile lawn, e The average driver is not ranch troubled by a small fine, and public sentiment has not probably arrived at the'point wiiere it would have the ma- jqfity of these violators sent to jail. But if the machiae wae looked ip sowewhor© so that the own er and hie family had to walk, snoh treatment weald have a very powerful deterrent effect, Such a plan might have qnlto beneficial yeoults-eft the speeaen i Jackson county. Home Town Thoughts A town U nautili like a business. Jf people push R» it goto hlfeafi, ond if they don’t, it stays where (t was or slips back, People who say they want good retools, and then w to ewoourag© their children to irregular at tendant^ and dodging of discipline, are doing what they tag to prodqbe poor wbools. The people «rho can’t find what they want in the bright new spring stocks of the stores of Awhland, will probably find a chance to spend more m«»»iey ana get something not so good. *°- W e hsye p raoirlng picture cam era at onr house, and ns Charley J seems to be out of the rn n n ln g /o r Hs grew white. la while, v s are going to f ill the long-felt want with real pictures, “Why.’ in n e U — I—* Buddy quiet- by the reel. Take the tele phone, for'instance. Where fonuealy people would have to spend half a day calling «around on their friends, neighbors, and busin&s offices, in order to organize some good community movement, now they can sit down at the telephone and do it in a few minutes. Such facilities make life infinitely easier, and |hey should leave more time for the develop ment of intelligence. There seems to he more genuine kindness than there used to be, more is given for oharity »»d philanthropy, human sympathy was never so keen. But people are terribly restless, and they hate to sit down for quiet thought and discussion. The result i« that many- evils obtain a hold iu the oom- munity. People are so busy and occupied, that they will not givs time and thought to the problem, of overcoming these defects. t Crater I In Winter BY JOHN M A S IN " Caretaker < t Orator L iira U a BY T4JB ASHLANP PBINTING CO. medals for his aeeuraey with the pistol and rifle.
