COMBINATIONS OF FABRIC
AND COLOR ARE STYLISH
tainly is very much present in
the present scheme of things in
fr.shion. Mysterious as its mean
ing may be to the uninitiated, it
is quite simply translated, and
accurately too, by the English
.word “ combination.”
Combinations are a very strong
note in Spring fashions. - Two
contrasting colors may be em-
plpyed in a dress; two, three or
four shades of the same color us
ed In a costume is another var
iant of the compose theme; while
two different fabrics or the dull
and lustrous side of the same
fabric are also classed under
the heading compose, although in
this instance no color combination
is used.
Last year the tendency toward
this trend was noted in the use of
a darker shade as collar or bord-
er, but the true compose cos
tume of this season is not con
tent to let one shade dominate
the ensemble— no, each member
qf the partnership has equal or
nearly equal shares. Blouse of
one color or fabric and skirt of
another is about thq most equit
able division that can be obtained,
and quite popular too.
Besides
the French grammar, one must
needs resort to the geometry text
book of one’s schooldays. TSiat
is, if one expects to design a dress,
Diagonal insets, chevrbns, intri
cate curved seamings, all are
smart and necessary.
Broad
stripes or bands also enter the
picture. It goes without saying,
of course, that this is but anoth
er aspect of the combination
theme. The Insets or stripes may
be of a darker hue of the same
color, or in the case of orepe satin
they are of the lustrous face of
the fabric, while the balance of
the dress is of the dull side.

Speaking of satin— well, speak
ing of It is quite worth while. For
there |s a great deal of it being
used, much more than is usual
ly customary in spring. This ap
plies to true satin, as well as to
crepe satin, which is used “ in
side out and outside in” as pre
viously discussed.
The heavy silk crepe»— flat
crepe and crepe de chine— are the
old standbys which we never de
sert. Several domestic mills have
recently brought out a flat crepe
In fast colors, which washes beau-,
ttfully. It can be purchased bz
the yard, of course, as well as in
dresses all ready to don. Of
course, in order to waq)i, the dress
must be of simple styling and
avoid the use of fine pleating.
The Introduction of this practical
note Is really a blessing, for. one
.can choose a light color with a
light heart, confident that a lit
tle soap and water will renew it
when it becomes soiled.

heat of summer makes itself felt,

Among the wool fabrics seen are
Kasha, wool crepe, wood Jersey,

Chinese, Japanese, Indian and
Persian influences are all seen
ip the new Jewelry. The Chinese
and Japanese Imprint is felt in
the sudden interest in jade jew
elry. Carved pendants, j a d e
rings, bracelets, charms, all show
the ipark o f the Orient quite
plainly.
The slave bracelet is, of course,
anóther child of the Orient. Per
sian dancers and Indian nautch
girl* wear them both as anklets
and bracelets. . Their hold upon
the Occident does not seem to be
waning, for they appear in many
types and exotic styles. Matching
set* of necklet and slave
link
braeelet áre often seen.
Besides the linked Blave brace
let, tho heavy Wide armlet js
quite popular. It is worn in ser
ies, often as many as five or six
gracing the arm of one fair wear
er. Heavy and massive, of beat
en silver of gold, they are often
encrusted with colored stones.
Black and White Trend Been in
More Occidental is the present
vogue for onyx and pearls, or
oynx and crystal. This is the di
rect result of the interest shown
in black and whit ecombinations
in the world of fashion, and var-
iedled*are the uses to which it
is put. Tassels of seed pearls,
with oyjjx tops.
Crystal
and
oynx pendant and rings.
Even cuff links! The n e w
cuff links are quite .important
because of the tailored suit and
blouse. They are not made af-
terter the fashion of a man’s
links.
More
convenient
and
feminine, they are permanently
linked -in Indestructible fashion.
A novelty for use with riding
apparel is a
cuff link bearing
a horse’s head with Btick pin to
match.
- Swimming costumes are of the c,
popular one-plece-with skirt- at-
tached variety, hut they are most
distinctly of this season’s mode.
They utilize the broad stripes so j,
often found, often in two or three f,
shades of one color, sometimes in a
vividly contrasting colors. They B]
further prove their smartness by
using square necks and V-necks
— quite a new departure from the .
familiar curved type.
I
The rather unbecoming, man- J
nish type of suit with inside shirt
and separate trunks has been
superseded this year, largely be
cause of its tendency to accentu
ate the hips unduly. In its stead
we find trunks attached to a
tunic, both of jersey. The trunks t
usually extend to the knee, while
the tunic is of hip length. Al- 1
though designed strictly as swim- c
ming suits, this dfles not prevent «
