The Editor’s Mail
BKa<.wg»AA
-
Rvery morning the editor comes to the office
to find his desk piled a foot diigh with letters, news
papers and periodicals from all cbrnegs of the globe.
There is enough uc^s |n that batch of mail'to fjl( thé
ordinary newspaper, without using a tine of local qr
the 15,OQ0-word telegraph, report received.
Then the editor’s work begins. Swiftly but care
fully he opens each envelope and peruses its con
tents, preparing the best of it for publication, rele
gating the poorer to the Alaste basket. It is a long,
tedious job but it is interesting.
There is no mail so entertaining, so enlightening'
as that of the editor. A peek into yesterday’s mail
will give you an idea of its variety. Following are
some of the things it brought to his attention:'
Estimated export of beehive coal from North
Atlantic ports for week was 829,124 tons.
Department of agriculture suggests general con
servatism as to crop acreage in 1927.
Meeting of the “ committee of òhe thousand,”
confession’ of
prohibition organization, was a “ tacit confession”
prohibition’s complete failure.
Prohibition is not responsible for denatunpits iq
alcohol.'
Electric horsepower use^ ip manufacture of
purses, pocketbooks and card, cases was 23.9, per cent
greater in 1923 than 1923.
• * Total value of mirrors produced in 1926 was
$34,679,471.
The National Wood Chemical association of
Bradford, Pa., wants us all to call the. stuff ‘,‘ma-
fhanol” instead of wood alcphok
Pennsylvania railroad ’« quarterly stock divi
dends “ spread happiness in many lands.”
November shipments of floor mid wall tile were
4,968,841 square feet.
State bankers’ committee declares McFadden
bill without the Hull amendments is in conformity
with anti-branch policy.
Association against thq prohibition amendment
calls on President Coolidge to detail marines and
coast guardsmen tq guarfi stores of poisonous al
cohol.
Scottish Rite nerws bureau* launches attack qu
fascism.

I ...
Recently Mrs. John Perrin wrote a Michigan
judge thanking him for his part in the speedy dis
patch of justice that sent foup slayers of her brother
a police sergeant, to the penitentiary for life. No
sociologist ever pointed out more clearly the only
Way t<> check juvenile delinquency than did Mrs.
Petrin in her letter. This is what she saiff:
• “ It seems a sad state of affairs ^hen so many
of our young men fall so willingly into criminal
WAY«. We (she and her husband) are wondering
whether a little more ?f the old-fashioneff home life,
with its family tics of love, auff respect for the rights
and privileges of each other, might not help to start
the young out in life with higher aims and nobler
aspirations.”
I t is true that sometimes men brought up in
ideal home conditions became criminals, but that is
so selffom that it indicates nothing but a lack of
normality in them.
Big Insurance
The insurance companies can’t complain of any
lack trf patrpnage. They find that they now have
oatstanding $79,000,000,000 of old-line life insur
ance on t h is continent. That is at least one-fifth
as much as the total wealth of the V«ited States.
The beneficiaries, too, can’t complain. In 1906
they received $287,000,000 which was an immense
sum f°r that time. This year the companies will
pay the sum of $1,350,000,000.
There is no branch of husipess and uo form of
prosperity in which the public may take more satis
faction than this same thriving life insurance busi-
hpsfl. Its ^eYelopmept h«s brought to million« of
families a thrift and a sense of security never 1».
