If the Wash ington monument were to be set atop the great •pyramid of Gixeb the combined height would faff short by 200 feet of reaching the top of this pro jected structure. It would be necessary to pile the Bunker Hiff monument on the combination to reach an altitude which would permit one to look over the top of i t In a valley of the Himalayas thia building wouldn’t look very tall, but set down among the Ozarks it would overtop some of the minor knobs and oome almost within half their height of rival ling the tallest peaks. On Manhattan island, which already supports the greatest aggregation of tall buildings in the world, it will stick up like a n?ono- litb—until somebody overshadows it with a taller one. The rearing of this structure will also enable the native Gothamite to bold up his head again. Naturally boastful of the bignè*« of his town and everything pertaining to it he had to suffer the humiliation of letting the upstart Detroit ff©t away with the highest office building in Christen dom. But now he can swagger once more for he will soon have a structural prodigy that wiff riee nearly 300 feet above the Book tower of Henry Ford’s town. P YWEU O£>-pOH! White BNDÍ5B9 BLOdK The C w e r Reward William Lawrence Saunders of New York has hung up a reward of $100,000 for cancer research scientists. Half is to be given for discovery of wfe cause of cancer and half for diseovery of a proved cure. This is very handsome ancf generops of Mr. Saunders, but it is unlikely to have any effect what ever either toward stimulating research or produc ing the discoveries which he wishes to reward. These discoveries, if they are» ever made, wUl be long in the category of things that cannot be bought and paid for. The winner or winners will be suc- cessfnl because of their insatiable thirst |o know, not because of any hope of financial reward. This is not saying that there is anything un moral in offering the reward or unethical In its ao- oeptanoe, in the event it is earned. If anybody earns the right to financial endowment which will forever remove from him the possibility of worry over a livelihood it is tbe patient and painstak ing delver into the causes and cares of the malignant plagues which afflict the bodies of men. The be- stowers of such rewards are entitled to full credit for taking it upon themselves to discharge the debt which the public owes, but they can hardly claim any share, even as instigators, in the achievement. Vueles« Investigations Now two or three congressmen have become greatly concerned over the charges involving Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker in “ sloughing” baseball games. And as might reasonably be expected, they have suggested a congressional investigation of the whole affair. e Congress of late is doing a great many things that the framers of tbe Constitution did not pro pose congress should do. Senators and representa tives are doing everything but the things they are elected to do. They seem to be a bunch of busy- bodies, meddling where they have no right to med dle. Members of both houses seem to take a great delight in holding investigations of one kind or another, none of which hap availed their constitu encies anything.
