and most modest of.m en. H is life was devoted to
the invention and perfection of the most murderous
of weapons, various types of automatic and sem i
automatic fiutam s. He ppobahiy had more to do
with the development of sporting weapons then any
other man iu America and probably was least known
in conneetjoii with then», Although he owned the
patents to scores o f improvements in firearms hig
naine, until recent years, was never used in con
nection with any o f thsm.
It was not until the United States army turn
ed to hipi for help in t w r , ttiat his Bams as an
inventor of firearms became generally known to the
people of the United States. B efore the was was
r over it was destU ed ho become one of the m o s f
frequent heard in army r^rkw.-
Before America entered the war the great value
of two types of automatic weapon, the machine gun
and the automatic rifle, had beep thoroughly demom
strated. The n$ed was felt, however, for a greater
perfection than had y et been attained. A machine
gun was granted which Would f ir e faster and longer
than a n y . then made, and an automatic rifle more
easily portable than the Lewis gun and more de,
pendable than the French Chauchat. Browning pro
duced both. The BnJwning W h i n e gun and the
Browning automatic rifle are probably the most

That the subject Is one needing a ttention any
body with the tuning in habit must admit. You
throw a switch, twirl a few .nobs and a door is
opened into a magic world, but Withal < chaotic
one. It is a world in which the human voice may
be projected over leagues of space entirely Unas
sisted by any carrying medium save that which
nature furnishes. And in it everybody is shouting
at the trip of hie voice and all a t the same time. It
sound |ike the mob scene in Julius Caesar on ly
more so.

A ll that is expected of congress is that it s h a llk
play the role o f the hero who steps into the room,
holds up his hand and says, “ Don’t all talk at
once.”
Its magnetic intervention is expected to
bring order out o f confusion without depriving any
body of the right to say his say or sing his song
by providing a system by which such saying and
singing can be carried on according to a schedule
of non-interferenoe.
Perhaps it can be done to the satisfaction o f
all concerned, talkers as well a s listenejrs-in, but
it looks a good.deal as though Hercules had a fairly
simple job with his seven labors compared w ith
what congress faces in tackling the radio problem.

»A little diabetes w ill do an old man good, Dr.
E lliott I . Joslin, eminent Harvard medico, is report
ed to have told the Ohio Valley Medical association.
He «ays it help« to keep down the fat which is us
ually worse than the diabetes.
It w ill be noted, howsper, that he specifies a little
diabetes, and that is where the whdle trouble comes
in. Few peeple are oontent with just a little. Once
they get a sample of it they cannot take it oT leave
it alone but plunge in clear up to the ears. I t ’» worse
than the liquor habit. There are lots of people who
cm take a little wine -for the’ stom ach’s sake and
stop there, but the diabetes seem never to know where
to stop, at least not until the doctor comes.
Instead o f advocaitng a little diabetes for ton-
old age .we think the doctor would be in bet-
working for a law prohibiting it entirely.
