ed reports of the fighting at W an-
Hsiefc, China, in which a BritUh
boarding party released white of­
ficers of vessels seised by Chin­
ese troops, indicate that the bat­
tle was the bloodiest in modern
history.
General Yangsen’s losses were
placed at between 2,000 and 5,000
killed mostly by the British bom-
