It la one of the most .exacting light plaqe competitions jn that the winner of the first .cash prize of. 615,000 will be re quired to maintain a sustained performance of daily flying — ,rnin or ehine — between now and next Friday, every other day over n different courae from ¡112 to 373 m iles.in length for a total distance of approximately 2,000 miles. • 'v .The same aeroplane and engine must be used throughout the com petition, hut certain minor re- ’pairs will be permitted the con testants without disquallflcaton. o The first prize Will go. to the lipht piano that during the stx iduys or the competition carries useful load per unit of fuel con sumed. All machines however will be required to maintain an average speed of at least 50 miles an hour, and each will be requir ed to carry a load Including pilot and passenger of not less than 340 pounds. In addition prior to actual pari ticipation in flights the owner •of each machine was required to give a demonstration of the prac ticability of the machine from the point, of view of private owner- slilp. This involved the dismalt- ling of the machine, housing it in a shed not more than ten feet wide and ten feet high, its re moval from the shed and reassem bly in a tim e for the whole pro cess not to exceed an hour. The competition marks a new departure in defining the limits of light aeroplanb construction in terms of engine weight instead of engine' horsepower. Heretofore it has been customary to define a light aeroplane as an aeroplane with an engine of not more than 1.000 cubic centimetres cylinder capacity, which developed approx imately 20 horsepower. In the present competition the only lim it on the engines is their weight, which it is specified shall not ex ceed 170 pounds. Great stride have been made in the past year in the construction of tight engines and the promot ers of the competition expect that before itB close several new world records for light aeroplane per formance will have been estab lished. The money for the prizes is be ing put up by The Daily Mall of London, with a view to the ulti mate development of a light air- DES MOINES, la., Sept. 11.— (U P )— Because of the fast thin ning ranks and increasing sup- eranuation of the heroic survivors of the Grbnd Army 6f the Repub lic, three of its national past com manders will serve as a commit tee to reports on plans for the final disbandment of that old body, and the .disposition of its funds and records, at the coming 60th'National Encampment here S^pt. 19-24, it was announced to day.
