T he people of Oregon can well re jo ic e ‘w ith the c iti­
zens o f A shland over th e revival of the S o u th ern Oregon
s ta t norm al school in its splendid new home on th e so u th ­
ern o u tsk irts of th is city.
T o day m a rk s an im p o rtan t mile-stone in the h isto ry
o f O regon education as well a s .in the civic h isto ry of
A shland, and it is m eet and p ro p er th a t the people of
th is p a rt o f the s ta te should pause and rejoice over the
com ing of th e new norm al school.
T he S outhern Oregon s ta te norm al school is d ed i­
cated to the young m en and women of Oregon to d ay u n ­
d e r the m ost auspicious of circum stances. I t was re ­
tu rn e d to A shland, a fte r a lapse of yeurs, because th e
.people of A shland and of Southern Oregon, have work-
ted fo r it incessantly d u rin g th e passing years.
Today the dream s of yesterd ay are fulfilled. The
norm al school comes into actu al being; it is given to the
s ta te and to th e people of th e sta te w ith a trie d and
proven ed u cato r a t th e helm. U nder th e g u id in g h an d of

Southern Oregon norm al school will sh o rtly ta k e ran k
w ith the forem ost in stitu tio n s of its c h a ra c te r in th e west.
He h a s g ath ered around him a staff of c o m p eten t,in stru c ­
tors, and w ith him as th e ir tn e n to r th ey a re destined to
place the new norm al school to th e forefront.
A CODE OF THE ROAD
O ver ill t h e R ocky M ountain section where m acadam
roads are the rule ra th e r th a n tlie exception, m o to r as­
sociations have p rom ulgated a set of d riv in g ru les which
is m eetin g w ith m uch fa v o r am ong m otorists generally.

an d in ju ries from careless and reckless d riv in g , a code
o f th e road would b rin g som e relief from th e p resen t d is­
tre ssin g situation. The code as ad o p ted in th e Rocky
M ountain section and which could well be followed in
O regon and o th e r staets, follow s:
A d riy e r who is a “ good s p o r t” w ill:
1. S ignal defin itely when tu rn in g o r stopping and
observe such signals from o th e r d riv ers.
2. Give the o th e r d riv e r, o r p ed estrian , when e n tit­
led to i t th e rig h t of w ay w ith o u t try in g to bluff him
out.

. 3. O bserve caution signs a t ra ilw a y crossings and
elsew here.
4. M aintain the av erag e speed of o th e r tra ffic on
crow ded highw ays and avoid zig-zagging th ru heavy tr a f ­
fic except when actu ally necessary.
5. D raw to curb o r off of highw ay when stopping.
6. Avoid b esp a tte rin g |H‘d estriaiis o r o th e r cars on
a m uddy street. . •
7. P roperly equip his c a r w ith g a s, oil, sp are tires,
tow rope, etc., and not depend on the g enerosity of others.
8. A v o id -p assin g a n o th e r car, even if the road is
d u sty ,’ unless he intends to continue a t a g re a te r sj>eed,
and avoid holding the cen ter of the tlm rofare.
9. H ave his c ar equipped w ith good ^brakes and
pro p erly ad ju sted lights.
10. Avoid crow ding tlfe o th e r fellow to th e edge of
the road o r passing an o th er c a r on a blind curve.
11. D rive a safe distan ce from th e c a r nheqd on a.
